Sonia Randhawa and Grace Hall bring you a May Day Special featuring conversations about solidarity and resistance including worker's struggles, the labour movement, protecting protest, and current campaigns and strikes happening in local communities, with news headlines, community annoucements, and guests including Len Cooper, Secretary of May Day Committee Vic; Louisa Bassini, ASU delegate, public housing lawyer, and Victorian Socialists candidate for the Merri-bek council; Adrian Pereira, veteran Malaysian labour activist and Exec Director of the North South Initiative; and Monica, union and community activist, member of Unionists for Palestine, and ASU for Palestine. Annie McLoughlin presenets a feature on International Workers Memorial Day (Apr 28), including vox pops from a memorial held in Melbourne on Mon 29 Apr to remember the 55 workers who died in the last 12 months of work related injuries in Victoria, and a recording of a speech by Jiselle Hanna from Australia Asia Worker Links (AAWL) on the international perspective to the memorial of workers who have lost their lives doing thier jobs (Melbourne Rally for Palestine, Sun 28 Apr). 9.00 - 10.00am | City Limits | Transport Week

Kevin Healy and Karina Aedo-Aguilera host a 'Transport Week' May Day special, focusing on our Union History, and featuring Merri-bek Councillor and community activist Monica Harte. She discusses her previous work life as a bus driver and president of the Tramways Union (ATMOEA) during the Melbourne 1990 tram strike. Later, Jack Howard, social activist who has done history research for the Rail, Tram & Bus Union (RTBU) Victoria, joins the conversation with an abridged history of our transport unions from the early 1900s to present.

Joe Toscano and Kelly Whitworth yarn with Steve Mintern, co-founding director of OFFICE, a not-for-profit multidisciplinary design and research practice, about architecture and public housing through the lens of progressive social change.

 

5.00 - 6.30pm | Special broadcast: Uprise Radio | International Workers' Day rally

We cross live to the May Day rally 'International Workers' Day' denouncing capitalism-colonialism and imperialism, from the State Library of Victoria. Organised by Black Peoples Union (BPU), Australia Asia Worker Links (AAWL), Latin American Solidarity Network (LASNET), Renegade Activists, The Sit-Intifada, and Free Palestine Naarm. Speakers include Keiran Stewart-Assheton, President of the Black Peoples Union; Cyndi Makabory, West Papuan activist; Marisol Salinas Caiched, Member of LASNET; Tasnim Sammak, Palestinian organiser, Unionists for Palestine; Hakim, Organiser with African Solidarity Collective; Hijrah Ahmed, member of Anak Bangsa Merdeka; Mohammed Sharab, Palestinian activist and The Sit-Intifada; and Monica Campo, Community and union activist, member of Unionists for Palestine. Guest hosts Michael Clune, an AWU delegate, organiser with Unionists for Palestine, and member of Victorian Socialists; Declan Furber Gillick, Central Arrernte man from Mparntwe, Central Australia, an Aboriginal communist, trade unionist, and member of Unionists for Palestine; and Oskar Martin, Bundjalung and Kamilaroi man and currently the Indigenous representative on Students’ Council at the University of Melbourne Student Union, discuss the Pilbara Strike, the longest strike in Australian history lasting 3 years, starting on 1 May 1946 and ending in 1949, where about 800 Aboriginal pastoral workers in NW Western Australia went on strike.
