Interview with Gary Murray, an Aboriginal activist, regarding the Ballerrt Mooroop site in Glenroy

MONEY remains the major sticking point in the transfer of the site of the former Ballerrt Mooroop college to Moreland Council.

Both the State Government and the council have indicated a preference for the land to be preserved for community use and not sold for private development but an agreement seems far from imminent.

The state-owned 2.4ha parcel of land was a school until closed in 2012. If a state department deems land surplus it then offers it to other state departments, before making it available to federal and local governments, with the price based on the Valuer-General Victoria’s valuation.

The Ballerrt Mooroop site is in danger of being sold off to private developers. If this happens we would lose a site of significance for Aboriginal people.
There is a campaign to save the Ballerrt Mooroop site for a Gathering Place and a First Nations Community Hub. There is also a Spirit Tree and Ceremonial Ground on the site.
