Episode 7: Creating anti-racist school cultures

Monday, 19 October 2026 - 10:30am to 11:00am

In the final episode of Teachers in Colour, we look at what needs to change beyond the spaces of curriculum and pedagogy to challenge structural racism in Australian schools. Teachers reflect on opportunities for leadership, and how their leadership capabilities have been perceived and nurtured within school hierarchies that remain largely white and patriarchal. They touch on sources of personal support such as mentors and union representatives, as well as the culturally informed support they wish they had been provided. We hear about the importance of resourcing and recognising anti-racist work at multiple levels within schools and across the education system. We offer this series as a project of counterstorytelling, situating racialised educators’ voices within recurring national debates about migration and in relation to ongoing anti-racist work led by First Nations people and communities. The episode closes with an invitation to listen carefully despite discomfort and to commit to sharing the labour of anti-racist work to collectively transform Australia’s education system.
