Episode 6: Staffroom confidential

Monday, 12 October 2026 - 10:30am to 11:00am

While the burden of navigating racism in the workplace is something that impacts racialised migrant teachers on an ongoing basis, this is rarely made visible in conversations about Australia’s education system. In this episode, we explore how racialised migrant teachers experience and confront everyday racism in their professional lives. You’ll hear teachers reflecting on the racialised expectations that shape how their authority and competence are perceived, and on stereotyping and racism from colleagues in the staffroom. Teachers describe the difficulty of naming these experiences as racism, and the gaslighting that often follows when they do. We also examine how teachers are positioned as racial intermediaries, expected to take on additional responsibilities as cultural interpreters and educators. Teachers also speak about the bind of witnessing racism directed at students, the importance of advocating on their behalf, and what it means to speak up.
