Sunday, 1 June 2025 - 3:00pm to 4:00pm
In the episode, we:
- handed our platform over to a diverse range of queer migrant voices
- heard from them their views on matters such as
- being shaped by country of origin and the (often multiple) cultures they have been exposed to since
- homaphobia and transphobia within cultures of origin: stereotypes vs the reality
- conflicts and compromises with family members, sometimes influenced by mixed cultural values
- how aspirations to move elsewhere can be part of queer identity in childhood, teen years and early adulthood
- the restrictions and liberations that can result from migrating
- finding new queer friendships, cultural allegiences and community
- comparisons of queer culture and the tolerance of queer identity in (so called) Australia, to elsewhere.
- compared the two very different manifestations of iconic gay pop band Bronski Beat, and discussed the quarrel that led to this shift in their sound and presentation (although, unfortunately, the podcast version of this show cannot actually feature the songs).
