7:15AM // Tilde Joy is one of the presenters and producers of 3CR's Slacker Radio, a show about radical unionism, local street movements, complaints about waged labour and strategies to slack off at work and still get paid. Recently Phuong listened to an episode of Slacker Radio during which TIlde and Jordan were talking about some news from the world of AI, from an AI doomsday cult recruiting influencers to a school district in the US introducing AI humanoid robots to the classroom. 7:30AM // Lilia Anderson is Policy and Strategic Research Lead at MEAA. She recently spoke at the event - Artificial Intelligence and Work in a Remade World, organised by Arena, NIBS (New International Bookshop) and Search Foundation on Wednesday 12 August. Lilia speaks about the impact that AI has and will have on journalism, how it is used by media companies to replace underpaid roles such as sub-editors and how the technological disruption has resulted in the casualisation of the workforce and increase of workload.
7:45AM // Alia Parker an experimental textile and fashion designer and researcher. Alia investigates the nexus of biology and design to provoke more sustainable and ethical ways of engaging with materiality.
8:00AM // Dr Caitlin McGrane is a feminist activist, researcher and academic, whose research explores gender, identity, technology and everyday life. She is particularly interested in how gender-based digital harms are experiened and resisted in quotidian ways. Caitlin is a Research Fellow in the School of Media & Communication at RMIT University, and is currently working on the Museum Digital Social Futures project that investigates digital-social co-creation between museums and their audiences as well as the Ageing in and through Data project—a Discovery study that investigates how older adults are incorporating technology into their ageing-in-place practices. Caitlin also sits on the board of the charity Digital Rights Watch. Caitlin joined us to discuss gender bias within AI and the role it plays in contributing to technology-facilitated gender-based violence.
8:15 AM // Melinda Tankard Reist is the Movement Director of Collective Shout and an author and advocate for young people. Collective Shout is a grassroots campaign against the sexual objectification of women and girls in media, advertising and popular culture. Last week, Collective Shout released a report investigating the cyber attacks targeted at its staff last year. Melinda is here to discuss the attacks which took place last year, the findings of this new report, and what reforms are needed to protect women from digital and AI harassment.
