Jed Pica is a Filipino non-binary lesbian and General Secretary of Migrante Australia, an alliance of grassroots migrants organisations of Filipinos and their families in so-called Australia. Jed joined us to speak about the newly launched campaign Laban Migrante, fighting against the exploitation of migrant workers and advocating for their rights and welfare. Dr Sophie Rudolph is a Senior Research Fellow in the Faculty of Education at the University of Melbourne. She has been on the NTEU University of Melbourne branch committee at the University of Melbourne for approximately 8 years and has been actively involved in two rounds of Enterprise Bargaining negotiations. Sophie spoke to us about the NTEU University of Melbourne strike action on Thursday 27 August as part of the enterprise bargaining that first commenced last November. There will be a rally at 12 pm at the John Medley Building as well as BBQ and live music at South Lawn.
Mel Fisher, spokesperson from the Anti-Poverty Network South Australia, joined the show to discuss the threat of the standards of energy efficiency levels in homes being reduced for those with lower incomes, raising the cost of living particularly within a changing climate. A report from the CSIRO has revealed that Australian homes are some of the most expensive to heat or cool and households who live in 1.7 star homes pay more than 6 times in energy bills than those living in energy efficient homes. The report has found this affects those with lower incomes and renters higher.
On Wednesday 12 August, at the rally to oppose the 'No Air in Prison' Bill, Karen Fletcher (Executive Officer of Flat Out Inc) spoke out against the mass incarceration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, as well as the mistreatment of people with disabilities and are victim-survivors of domestic violence in prison. In her speech, she emphasised the importance of understanding the root causes of issues impacting communities and fighting against this and other harmful bills. She was introduced by Rally MC Maggie Munn, First Nations Justice Director at the Human Rights Law Centre.
