This year marks the 80th anniversary of the use of nuclear weapons. In 1945 the US detonated the first atomic bomb in New Mexico, the Trinity test on 16 July before the army dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima on 6 August followed by Nagasaki on 9 August. Survivors and their families continue to share testimonies in a bid to ensure that this never happens again. 80 years on there are still around 12,500 nuclear weapons that threaten life on earth and a global movement for nuclear disarmament continues working toward the elimination of these horrific weapons.
