Buses for the west campaign and doing grassroots democracy

Friday, 6 November 2026 - 10:00am to 10:30am

Elyse Cunningham and Amy Ciara talk about the campaign for a more frequent and user-friendly bus network in the western suburbs of Melbourne, powered by clean, electric buses.

Elyse is coordinator of Friends of the Earth Melbourne's Sustainable Cities collective, which is behind the campaign. Amy is part of the collective action for the campaign, and broadcaster of 3CR's Kill Your Lawn program.

Currently people in the west are seriously underserved by public transport, leading to  limited access to places such as school, jobs, health and support services, and activities for children. In addition many feel unsafe waiting long times for buses, that are often unreliable.

The campaign is advocating for a better bus network, based on research at the University of Melbourne.

Elyse also explains the decentralised governance structure of the campaign itself.
