Residents Speak Out: Homes, Not Demolition

Tuesday, 19 August 2025 - 7:30am to 8:00am
In today’s episode, we bring you two powerful speeches from residents of the Flemington and Richmond public housing towers, recorded at the Save Public Housing Rally on Saturday 2 August 2025. While the government claims these towers are old, outdated, and unsafe, residents tell a far more complex and deeply personal story. You’ll also hear from Lara, a resident of the South Yarra towers, who joins us for an interview to share her experiences and perspective.

Special thanks to 44FU for helping to connect with Lara. You can find them at 44fu.org. 44FU is a grassroots group led by public housing residents, fighting to protect their homes and communities.

A group of people gathered at the Save Public Housing Rally hold a large sign reading “SAVE PUBLIC HOUSING.” Other smaller signs read “SAVE OUR HOME.” The crowd is standing in front of the State Library in Melbourne.

In front of the Parliament of Victoria, several cardboard houses display messages such as “SAVE PUBLIC HOUSING” and “OUR HOUSES ARE OUR HOME.” A police officer stands on the steps in the background.
