GO BACK

Lobbyists in Canberra - GE in Bangladesh - Fossil fuelled AMOC in the Atlantic

Go Back! We don't approve! These are the words from Bangladeshi artists in the ELECTRIC BANGLADESH exhibition in Boston Bangladeshi Artists Paint A True Picture of GE's Greenwash by Market Forces

Guests:

Munira Chowdhury from Market Forces visited the place where  a new gas project is proposed by GE. In Chattorgam alone these projects would double the emissions of  the whole of Bangladesh. GE , which has signed up to the NetZero2050 pledge and is also one of the world's biggest wind turbine manufacturers needs to get behind the Electrify Bangladesh banner. As  one local put it

" Only Landowners will be compensated. Us fisherfolk and salt workers will get nothing" Ismail Pascha - Crab farmer from Chattorgram.

Bangladesh is already exposed to climate disasters, like cyclone Mocha this year which killed over 100 people. Billions of dollars in economic loss and a national goal of 40% renewable energy by 2041 means they need our support to  electrify not the expansion of gas projects.

“Bangladesh, a country with its unique cultural tapestry and vibrant heritage, is an embodiment of resilience and strength.” Debashish Chakrabarty. Artist

Senators David Pocock, Monique Ryan and Kate Chaney speak about the number of lobbyists in Canberra. They are on no register and they can infuence politicians as no ordinary citizens can.  Senator Ryan proposed urgent reforms to this as well as to the rotating door between industry and parliament which is also a security risk.Dr Monique Ryan MP 7.8.23

Simon Walker's interview with Professor Susanne Ditlevson on the AMOC

Professor Susanne Ditlevsen is a professor in the department of Mathematical Sciences in the University of Copenhagen. Their latest study, along with Prof. Peter Ditlevsen of the University of Copenhagen, warns of the fragility of the (AMOC) Atlantic meridional overturning circulation - a system of currents that circulates water within the Atlantic ocean, bringing warm water north and cold water south. It is an important component of Earth’s climate system Their findings suggest that the AMOC could collapse within this century, earlier than reports made by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and would be a tipping point for disastrous effects on weather patterns, ecosystems, and food security.

Music:    In Love With This Place // Jess Ribeiro – The Environmental Music Prize

I’m in love with this place, if I could show you your heart would change.

WHY I WROTE THIS SONG

Bummed out by the current state of the world I sat by the water and imagined politicians “doing time” in nature.

Imagine if no decisions could be made until you had spent time consulting with the natural world.

I feel like the people in charge of our planet are disconnected. If they entered deeply into a sincere relationship with nature, they would start making thoughtful and lasting choices.
