In my interview with Nic Clyde we cover some of the heroes of the great battle to stop coal exports coming back to us as drought, heatwave, flood and fire. It's been going on for years and the end is in sight as Nic describes all the big employment opportunities which will absorb the transitioning coal mine workers.

We talk about Wendy Bowman and Ramesh Agrawal both of whom won the International prize for audacious environmental protrection The Goldman Prize. In both cases a coal mine threatening farm land or an aquifer was stopped. 

We pass by the Bylong Valley and the Battle for Bentley to stirr up that citizen courage which is needed to disallow the biggest coal mine extension ever proposed in NSW. In the words of Lock the Gate's National Director  Georgina Woods-

 “Glencore and Yancoal are digging in their heels and pushing the HVO workforce and the planning system to the brink by refusing to even consider a compromise option that would retain mining jobs but limit the project's environmental harm.Glencore’s refusal to compromise is an insult to the communities across NSW that reported to the Net Zero Commission that ‘climate impacts are becoming more frequent, more intense and increasingly difficult to manage.’”

Meanwhile Paul Scully, the NSW Planning MInister estimated that global demand for coal is changing and by 2035 "over half of NSW coal mines are expected to close." There is a stalled Bill before parliament called The Future Jobs and Investment Bill.

If they pass this bill, companies must have a detailed workforce transition plan approved by the government before a mine closes. It provides a dedicated agency to handle retraining and regional investment. It's called The future jobs and Investment Authority

The context: 2026, the Insurance Council of Australia issued a new report, which found that since 2019, there have been at least 29 extreme weather events costing $20.7 billion and damaging more than 760,720 homes and buildings.
