The annual Beyond the Bars broadcast series, which began in 2002, cannot be delivered as per normal in 2020 due to Covid-19 restrictions. Usually throughout May and June we deliver workshops inside six prisons, and during NAIDOC Week we deliver live radio broadcasts from these same facilities. They are: The Dame Phyllis Frost Centre, Port Phillip Prison, Loddon/Middleton Prison, Barwon Prison, Karreenga/Marngoneet Correction Centre, and Fulham Correctional Centre. NAIDOC Week has been postponed to 8-15 November, but we wanted to reach out to the men and women at this time to facilitate their voices, and tell them they are not forgotten.
3CR Indigenous broadcasters are recording messages, cheerios, poems, stories, raps and short interviews with some of the inmates over the phone.
We will be bringing you the voices of Indigenous men and women from the inside at midday from Monday 6 July to Friday 10 July.
We have also sent the six prisons a special message and musical performance from Mutti Mutti singer/songerwriter and co-founder of the Beyond the Bars project, Kutcha Edwards. The 45 minute concert is an intimate and beautiful performance especially for the men and women in Victorian jails, and will be shared with them in the time that normally we would be in to visit.
