We need to talk about class!

Friday, 9 December 2022 - 10:00am to 10:30am

Jennifer and Jacques talk about class - how it has gone out of fashion to talk about it since the 1950s, and especially since the 1980s with neoliberalism and the denial that there is serious wealth and income inequality.

Nevertheless, the concept of class seems to be having a revival, with several books on the topic being recently released. It's also worth having a look at the recommended reading list of the Australia Institute

Threadgold, S & Gerrard, J (eds.) (2022) Class in Australia Clayton: Monash University Publishing

Schneiders, B (2022) Hard Labour: wage theft in the age of inequality Melbourne: Scribe

Chan, Ha-Joon (2022) Edible Economics: A Hungry Economist explains the World  London: Allen Lane (Penguin imprint)

Piketty, T (2019) Capital and Ideology Cambridge (MA):Harvard University Press

Piketty, T (2022) Time for Socialism Yale University Press

Think Again offers weekly conversations and reflections about current events, trends and public pronouncements on contemporary and emerging issues. The show moves beyond what we read and hear via the public and ‘social’ media, to invite alternative possibilities to guide our thinking, living and organising.
