The Sounds of Chinese

Sunday, 21 January 2024 - 2:00pm to 3:00pm
Katy Chan of Hong Kongology

Katy, co-host and producer of Hong Kongology, plays and mixes a selection of folk ballads, narrative songs, opera sound and pop music prevailing the Cantonese and Hokkien communities across South China, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia in the 80s and 90s.

The selection showcases diverse linguistic traditions, cultures, social memories, and identities in the Sinophone world. It is played from a variety of mediums including digital archives, restored vinyl records, and second-hand cassettes from the regions.
