Refugee Radio - Andre and Donna from Behind the Wire

Sunday, 27 December 2015 - 10:00am to 10:30am
Andre, Celine, Donna, and Min.

Today we interviewed Andre and Donna from the Behind the Wire project. Andre spoke about the importance of having an ethical framework and platform from which refugees and asylum seekers are welcome and comfortable to tell their stories, and Donna spoke about the bravery of her parents' decision to flee with their children to Australia, only to face the horrors of mandatory detention. One of the most important insights she had concerning mandatory detention was that ideally the Australian Government should work with the different community groups and organisations to welcome refugees and asylum seekers instead of making decisions as a separate entity. "Australia is full of community groups and organisations just trying to make the world a better place, a place they dream it should be" she said.
