The end of New START

Saturday, 14 February 2026 - 10:00am to 10:30am

Today we speak with Dr.Tilman Ruff about the end of the New START Treaty, that removes a significant nuclear restraint between Russia and the United States, which together possess 87% of the world’s nuclear weapons. Under New START,  the United States and Russia were limited to deploy each a maximum of 1,550 strategic nuclear warheads and 700 nuclear weapon delivery systems.  They also complied with verification, notification, and on-site inspection mechanisms that reduced uncertainty and helped prevent miscalculation.  We discuss what the end of New START means for the world, the immediate impacts on this continent and the vital role of the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons at this time.
