Global and local updates

Saturday, 2 February 2019 - 10:00am to 10:30am
Kevin Buzzacott & Sue Coleman-Hasseldine at the Australian Nuclear Free Alliance meeting.

Today we are joined by Dr.Jim Green - National Anti-nuclear campaigner with Friends of the Earth for an update on the state of play for the nuclear industry internationally and a look ahead to nuclear free campaigning in Australia for the coming year.   Jim is the editor of the World Information Service on Energy's Nuclear Monitor.  Read online or subscribe www.wiseinternational.org.  To sign up for local updates and get involved in Friends of the Earth's Anti-nuclear campaign go to www.melbournefoe.org.au/nuclear_free.

Sue Coleman-Hasseldine who has travelled the world working for a nuclear weapons ban, brings us up to date on whats happening locally on Kokatha-Mula country in SA, especially the current major threat from oil drilling in the Bight.  BP pulled out of their plans to drill for oil in the Bight in October 2016, after releasing worst-case oil spill modelling, that showed the impact of an oil spill could impact coastline from Western Australia through to Victoria, and Tasmania.  Their two exploration permits were taken over by Norwegian company Statoil last year and they are now seeking approval to conduct exploratory drilling for oil in the Bight.  If their plan is approved, they could start exploratory drilling about 200 kilometres off the South Australian coast as early as the end of next year.  An alliance of groups is working to stop these plans: www.fightforthebight.org.au.
