India Censored: Balaghat Tragedy

Tuesday, 27 October 2026 - 8:30am to 9:00am

According to a study acquired by Indian Express, between March and July of this year, the Indian government sent nearly 1.95 lakh blocking orders to Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.

That is 1,275 blocking orders every single day.

One order every 68 seconds.

But behind those numbers are real human lives and real stories being erased in real time.

We bring you a report from the remote, forgotten villages of Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh.

Since May, over 30 children have died. Babies just three months old. Five-year-olds weighing a heartbreaking 5 kilograms, systematically starved by acute malnutrition and left with no clean water to drink.

Most of these children belonged to the Baiga community, one of India’s most vulnerable adivasi groups. And while official records registered only 10 deaths, independent journalist Bindu and her team stepped up to uncover the heartbreaking reality.

But as soon as they began documenting the truth and sharing with the world, their accounts were abruptly suspended, shut down, and silenced.

This government silence and the attempt to scrub Balaghat’s tragedy from public view comes at a time of a broader, systemic internet lockdown—just like what we saw during the Jantar Mantar student protests, the CJP demonstrations, and various other protests across India.

When the state cannot cover up its failures, it cuts the wire.

Lets dive in and hear more from Bindu.
