Gender and the AFL

Monday, 8 August 2022 - 8:30am to 9:00am
A close up photograph of Melbourne Demons AFLW captain Daisy Pearce standing in a stadium and holding a football in her left arm. She is smiling and wearing a Demons guernsey and her mouthguard. The background is hazy with some spectators visible.

In today's show, we are joined by Marnie Vinall and Dr Kasey Symons to unpack some important issues around gender dynamics in sports reporting and commentary, and to reflect on the growth of the AFLW with a focus on the AFLW fandom. Marnie is a sports reporter at The Age based in Naarm/Melbourne. Kasey is an academic and writer also based in Naarm, and is a Research Fellow in the Sport Innovation Research Group at Swinburne University as well as a co-founder of the women in sport collective Siren Sport.

The photograph above was shot by multimedia creative and member of Siren Sport Megan Brewer.
