Robert had a pretty difficult life as a child, both parents were drinkers and into gambling and drugs. His parents separated when he was at secondary school and he left school early to escape the social stigma.

Robert was introduced to underage gambling as a 12 year-old and he went on to develop a pokies habit in his mid-twenties. He eventually gambled away the family home before becoming homeless and suicidal. Robert eventually found help through Gamblers Anonymous and after white-knuckling it for about six months he eventually got honest, changed his values and built a contented life without needing to gamble.
