Steven Kilbey was born on September 13, 1954, in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England. His family moved to Australia five years later, first settling in Dapto, NSW, then Wollongong, and finally Canberra. It was here that Kilbey developed his love for music, drawn to artists like The Beatles, Bowie, The Byrds, T-Rex, The Easybeats, Russell Morris, and Dylan.
At 17, Kilbey joined a Canberra cabaret band, Saga, before moving on to Beyond Beavers. In 1974, he teamed up with Peter Koppes in Precious Little, which by 1975 evolved into Baby Grande. The band played glam rock and hard power-chord music, and even supported AC/DC, recording demos for EMI. These demos were later released as an album by US label Hozac in 2018. Despite their efforts, EMI did not sign them.
Kilbey later moved to Sydney, where he met Marty Wilson-Piper, and with Koppes and Nick Ward, they formed The Church Of Man, later shortened to The Church.
Kilbey is widely regarded as a legend, known for his songwriting, bass playing, and singing with The Church, whose debut album Of Skins and Heart was released in April 1981. The Church has since released 25 albums, along with countless EPs, singles, and compilations, including iconic tracks like "The Unguarded Moment" and "Under the Milky Way." The band has consistently toured internationally.
In addition to his work with The Church, Kilbey has been prolific in his solo projects, including The Slow Crack, Remindlessness, and White Magic, a collaboration with Martin Kennedy of All India Radio. The Hall of Counterfeits is a sprawling 23-track album of lush, cosmic, melancholic songs that demand full attention to appreciate their beauty.
