Stefan Schutt is a guitarist and songwriter who, just like Bootsy Collins, Dee Dee Ramone, Jah Wobble, Tina Weymouth and Les Claypool, took up bass as well. His first gig was at fifteen, in a group called Street Directory -- their one and only show, next to the Pizza Hut at the ABC shopping centre in Whyalla, South Australia.
Since then, Stefan's played guitar and bass in plenty of fine combos. There was Yacht Club, who supported Hunters & Collectors in Adelaide. After moving to Melbourne in 1989 he led the neo-funk outfit Stanley's Dance, and played guitar in the short-lived and notorious Nam: The Musical.
In 1991 he started his best-known band, Peachfuzz, with Stephen Hyde and Cameron Potts. They kept at it for five years. After Peachfuzz split, Stefan tracked down his biological father and spent a year living in the Middle East.
Back in Australia he put together Schmozzle, a lo-fi Guided By Voices-style home recording project. He also found time to play bass in two bands with former Paintstripper guitarist Andrew Wills: Big Cat Safari and Stavros Brothers, who released three albums.
From 2016, Stefan played guitar with Ashtray Boy and its side project Bad Guys, and bass in Ekranoplans with Aaron Goldberg from The Earthmen, Sonke Rickertson from Slub on drums, and Simon Strong from Pink Stainless Tail. Ekranoplans brewed up a heavy, psychedelic strain of dub-inflected rock, released two albums, then imploded in 2025.
Since then he's been playing guitar in Ashtray Boy and Alluvial Nuggets. Now, Stefan Schutt is here with Dr Gonzo to introduce tracks from Scratched Erratic -- the first Schmozzle release since 2003, on And This One's Introduced By, here on community radio 3CR.
