If you’ve been following the Australian folk music scene and have found yourself at a few festivals, chances are you’ve been impressed by Mandy Connell.
She’s performed solo, as part of The Maggie Darlings, and with the five-piece band The Stray Hens—gracing stages at the Maldon Folk Festival, Port Fairy Folk Festival, The National Folk Festival, and countless other venues across the country.
Recently, Dr Gonzo parked his converted VW delivery van-slash-mobile recording studio outside Mandy’s home in Castlemaine to capture her track-by-track introductions for her upcoming—and yet-to-be-released—album, The Girl Who Fell Off The Wall.
This edition of And This One’s Introduced By… is the 3rd episode in the Goldfields Series: a collection of artist-led features spotlighting regional talents like Doc Henry, Rebecca Tolhurst, David Thrussell—and, of course, Mandy herself.
Mandy is an artist who channels her world and lived experience into her songs. Her energy, irrepressible laugh, and distinctive voice are magnetic, drawing listeners into her storytelling.
I’d compare her to the likes of Sandy Denny, Bridget St John, Maddy Prior, and June Tabor—captivating artists who also weave tradition with originality. Like them, Mandy is deeply underrated. Though often labeled a folk singer, some of her songs carry the edge and urgency of punk rock protest.
Acclaimed Scottish / Australian folk singer Eric Bogle said it best:
"Mandy Connell is the latest in a long and distinguished line of talented female musicians to grace the musical scene in Australia. A fine singer and songwriter in her own right, she also has the knack of taking other people's songs and, by virtue of her original and unique interpretations, making them her own—the mark of a truly gifted performer."
Mandy Connell joins Dr Gonzo to introduce the tracks from her forthcoming album The Girl Who Fell Off The Wall on And This One’s Introduced By…
