Is Australia racist and where's the working class? Two questions for television

Thursday, 9 March 2017 - 6:00pm to 6:30pm

Is Australia Racist? That's the title of a recently screened current affairs documentay, part of the SBS week long special, Facing Up to Racism. This week, we hear Liz Giuffre, communications lecturer at University of Technology Sydney discuss the show's televisual format as well as its underlying assumptions.

“What do the recent mini-series Hoges, about the life of Paul Hogan, and the Fair Work Commission ruling regarding reduced Sunday penalty rates for workers have in common?” That's UTS media studies specialist Sarah Attfield's question, and she talks about the social and political implications of television programming that ignores the working class.
