The parlous state of football commentary across the footy codes

Thursday, 28 March 2024 - 4:00pm to 4:30pm

In the absence of James, Em and John take the opportunity to devote the whole episode to exploring the theory of football commentary across all the footy codes - soccer, rugby and Aussie rules, exposing their pet hates:

  • overcrowding in the commentary box
  • excessive yelling into the mic
  • verbal diahorrea
  • expert commentators who can't shut up
  • fake excitement
  • the lure of the 'promo' moment

As a reminder of how it used to be, we hear an excerpt of the 3KZ radio call from the 1962 VFL Grand Final between Essendon and Carlton. The caller is P. Gibbs (Phillip?)
