City Limits - Closed loops: plastics recycling and uranium mining

Wednesday, 26 July 2017 - 9:00am to 10:00am

City Limits                         26-7-17

On today's programme Kevin Healy and Megan Kimber discuss inequality, political trust funds, and quirky news from Florida, U.S.A.

We then investigate two issues - the problems with local recycling centres, and the issues with Australia's uranium mining industry.

Helen Vandenberg is a well-known activist from the North-Western Suburbs of Melbourne who talks to us about the recent Melbourne recycling centre fire that has taken 11 days to extinguish. More than 70 residents have registered for a legal class action against the operator.

Dave Sweeny is an anti-uranium campaigner from the Australian Conservation Foundation, and we talk to him about the state of the global uranium industry and Australia's role in the production of uranium. We find out where the uranium mined in Australia goes to, discuss the reasons for the global downturn in uranium use, and hear more about the situation in Western Australia where the Government have been taken to court after approving a mine that does not meet environmental standards.

Wednesday 9:00am to 10:00am
Urban environment issues, analysing government services, both federal and state and local campaigns.
