BTB 06Indigenous prisoners in Victoria broadcast live radio from 3 – 7 July on 3CR 855AM during NAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee) Week 2006.

In Australia’s only live broadcasts from prison, Indigenous men and women spoke out directly to the public about their experiences of incarceration. While being only 2.4% of the general population, Indigenous people make up 22% of the prison population* with an increase of 12% from 2004 to 2005**. Indigenous broadcaster and activist Kutcha Edwards states that, “We get pulled over the coals of a law that is not ours”.

Beyond the Bars is a unique series of live prison radio broadcasts that give voice to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander inmates in Victorian prisons. The broadcasts are presented by 3CR's First Nations broadcasters during NAIDOC* Week (July).
