The attack on Charlie Hebdo head office has provided the French government with the perfect catalyst to crack down on civil liberties. 10,000 police officers were deployed on the streets of France with some 54 people being arrested for supposedly defending terrorism.

But other than the absolute hypocrisy of calling the response a defence of Freedom of Speech, what is really going on in France? What’s the social and political context in which this shooting was even possible?
