A vibrant ‘A Taste of Portugal’ cultural festival is scheduled for 7 June 2009 at the Queen Victoria Market, Queen Street (Corner of Elizabeth Street and Victoria Street) Melbourne, from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

Catering for young and old, it encompasses delicious gourmet foods, wine, music and dance. “A Taste of Portugal” envelopes the high-spirited community with the essence of Portuguese custom at heart.

This Festival celebrates Portugal’s National Day June 10, 1580, the date of Luis Camões’ Death. Luis Camões was an adventurer who lost an eye in battle. He wrote an epic poem “OS LUSIADAS” and survived a shipwreck. During the shipwreck Camões saved his poem by swimming with one arm while keeping the other above water. Camões became a national symbol of Portuguese culture and literature. Nowadays “A Taste of Portugal” has transpired to become a more community based Festival, attempting to preserve a small piece of history, year after year. It commemorates Portugal’s extraordinary history and all the countries that adopted the Portuguese language, tradition and culture. This was initiated by the ever so curious Portuguese explorers, whose great adventures left evidence of the Portuguese language & culture, making it the 6th most spoken language in the world.
