Tanaka-san Will Not Do Callisthenics screens as part of Asialink’s Winter Writing Series followed by green tea, sake and a Q+A with director Maree Delofski, June 10 at Sidney Myer Asia Centre.
Tanaka-san Will Not Do Callisthenics follows Tanaka Tetsuro, whose refusal to do early-morning company callisthenics led to his sacking. He’s since maintained a daily protest vigil outside the company gates for more than 25 years. In the process, this simple act has exposed the increasingly authoritarian nature of Japanese corporate management systems.
The film’s humour, poignancy and optimism create a complex portrait of an idiosyncratic Japanese nonconformist. Its resonances reverberate beyond Japan into our increasingly globalised world.
Maree Delofski is a documentary film writer/director who has made several award winning films including The Trouble with Merle and A Calcutta Christmas. Her films have screened nationally and internationally at festivals and on television. Maree was awarded an Asialink Literature Residency in India (2000) where she researched and wrote the script for The Trouble with Merle. The script was shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards, and the resulting film won the NSW Premier’s History Award.
