Weaving Dark into Light Fundraiser: solar panels for East Timor’s poorest

The Alternative Technology Association (ATA) is helping East Timor’s poorest generate their own income, by installing solar power that will generate light.

ATA will be raising funds for the first stage of the East Timor Women’s Association’s Gimme Shelter project, which will bring solar powered lighting to women’s weaving collectives, in the remote villages of Fuat and Kainleu.

Installing planet-friendly lighting ensures these women can support their communities through the sale of their traditional cloth to local and international markets, whilst preserving their cultural practices and the environment.

The money raised will also help fund a solar-powered mobile theatre for community education, and lighting for households in rural areas.

ATA Project Manager, Anton Vikstrom, the ATA International Project Group and International Volunteers will be giving a presentation on their work in East Timor and recruiting volunteers for future projects.

Tuesday (16th June), 6:30pm. Level 2/39 Little Collins Street, Melbourne.Donation at the door $10.
