Australia's Climate Action Summit is an initiative of the grassroots climate movement. Its purpose is to unite the movement behind a single national climate campaign and send a strong message to the Federal Government that the Australian people demand immediate leadership and policies for a safe climate in 2009.

Last year, Kevin Rudd was elected to government in the world's first climate change election. One year on, we are still waiting for the urgent action needed to peak our greenhouse gas emissions and begin this urgent transition to renewable energy.

In December 2009, Kevin Rudd will meet with world leaders in Copenhagen, to set the framework and benchmarks for future global action on climate change. We need to ensure the Australian Government goes to Copenhagen with the strongest commitment to reducing greenhouse pollution and averting runaway climate change.

Community climate action groups from across the continent will join together for Australia's Climate Action Summit the weekend before the first day of the 2009 Federal Parliament.

On the first day of Parliament, 3rd February 2009, we will hold a large peaceful community action. We anticipate thousands of ordinary Australians will attend this event, creating a human chain encircling Federal Parliament. On the same day, the network will launch its national campaign at Parliament House. The aim is to create a huge political and media event that places climate change at the top of the Federal and public agenda in 2009.
