“Human rights, protest and police surveillance:

a forum on intelligence gathering and monitoring of public protest”

Recent news reports have revealed the increasingly widespread and targeted involvement of state and federal police, ASIO and even private agencies in monitoring groups and individuals participating in public protest.

In the courts, a case currently underway at VCAT* is challenging police powers to collect and retain footage of people at protests in relation to a 2010 climate change protest at Hazelwood Power Station in the Latrobe Valley.

This forum brings together experts in law, human rights and surveillance, as well as individuals who have sought to protect their privacy through the courts, and asks:

What kind of monitoring and surveillance techniques are currently being utilised?
What are the effects of this practice from a democratic and human rights perspective?
What legal protections are available and how adequate are they?

The event is open to all who have an interest in learning about and addressing this critical human rights issue.

Anna Brown Solicitor and Director of Advocacy and Strategic Litigation, Human Rights Law Centre

Special guests, Chris Heislers and Jan Beer, will talk about their experiences of being monitored for opposing the desalination plant and North-South pipeline and their subsequent legal challenge.

Resistance and Socialist Alliance present a day of radical ideas and discussion to give young people a political voice, and talk about how we can go about campaigning around different issues and get organised.

This will be a day of radical ideas for radical youth who want to help make a change in the world around them, as opposed to just sitting back and watching it all unfold.

We will have 5 workshops for the day, discussing various issues which effect young people, and a range of campaigns which Resistance and Socialist Alliance are involved in, and how we can go about making those campaigns and being politically active more accessible for current generation radicals! Workshops include: 11:30-12:45

The Revolution will be Televised: Arts, Culture & Activism

Radical musician and activists the Dead Peasants will also play us out with some songs of protest to finish the day!

Speakers include Iranian refugee Heydar Ghasemi, Ace Kollective anti uranium mining activist Tully McIntyre, Feminist activist from direction action Feminist group La Barbe, Casey Jenkins, as well as speakers from Quit Coal, trade unionists and others! There will also be chance for some more informal discussion at the conclusion of the workshops and an after party to follow!

Registration is at 11 and we will kick off with the first lot of workshops at 11:30, all welcome!

Clara Fraser(1923-1998) came from the revolutionary movement of the United States and co-foundedRadical Women in 1967. Impacted very young by revolutionary giants such asClara Zetkin, Karl Marx and Leon Trotsky, Fraser developed the theory thatfeminism and socialism are linked and those most oppressed by the capitalistsystem will lead in its overthrow.

Revolution,She Wrote is a collection of Fraser’s writings andspeeches that span nearly 50 years. It is a theoretical goldmine of SocialistFeminist analysis, enriched by Fraser’s mastery of history and contemporaryevents and by her incisive wit.

Young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds, community organisations, local govenment and artists come together to discuss the great, the challenging and the maddening world of community arts.

pARTicipate in workshops and interactive presentations that demonstrate good practice as well as enjoy performances from young emerging artists!
