Last 27th-30th January social movements
around the world gathered in the Assembly of the Social Movements during the
Thematic Social Forum in Porto Alegre (Brazil), discussed and concludes future
actions in this long struggle with corporations and riches dominant sectors of
our society, our workshop will explore and report back about this amazing
meeting just happening a week ago..some of the ideas are register in one of
final declaration paragraph:
“People all over
the world are suffering the effects of the aggravation of a profound crisis of
capitalism, in which its agents (banks, transnational corporations, media
conglomerates, international institutions, and submissive governments) aim at
increasing their profits applying interventionist and neo-colonial policies.
War, military occupations, free-trade neoliberal treaties and “austerity
measures”, expressed as economic packages that privatize state companies, cut
wages and rights, increase unemployment, and ravage natural resources. Such
policies strike the richer countries of the North harder and are increasing
migration, forced displacement, evictions, debt, and social inequalities.”
“Inspired by the
history of our struggles and the inspiring strength of movements like the Arab
Spring, Occupy Wall St., “indignados”, the struggle of Chilean students, the
unionist in Colombia, the landless workers in Brazil, Women and indigenous
peoples, the Social Movements Assembly call upon popular forces and
activists of all countries to mobilize actions - coordinated at world level - to
contribute to people’s emancipation and self-determination, reinforcing the
fight against capitalism.”

What role did real estate play in the crashing of the global economy? Real Estate 4 Ransom is a new documentary about global property speculation and its impact on the economy. Victorians are invited to take part in a unique celebration of one of Australian folklore’s greatest contributors, as the Royal Historical Society of Victoria presents “The Hugh Anderson Event”.
To be held on Tuesday 14 February at 11.30am, guests will be treated to songs by folk legends Danny Spooner, Dave and Lynne Lumsden and Dave de Hugard as we take a look back at Dr Anderson’s extensive achievements and celebrate his 85th birthday.
The event will also see Dr Anderson launch his latest work - “Two axe Mac: the story of Simon McDonald” – and showcase extracts from the book’s companion CD.
“Recognised as our greatest authority on the history of Australian folklore, Hugh Anderson’s ground-breaking work really established the study of folklore as a scholarly field in Australia,” noted Dr Andrew Lemon, President of the RHSV.
“His expert eye has given us a greater understanding of a huge cast of characters in Australian history, especially poets such as Adam Lindsay Gordon and John Shaw Neilson.
“Writing for all audiences and ages, he has compiled more than a dozen monographs, authored eight bibliographies of Australian writers, edited numerous primary sources, provided 13 entries to the Australian Dictionary of Biography and produced 22 textbooks!”
Dr Anderson was a founding member of the editorial board of Australian Folklore, a Fellow of the Australian Centre at the University of Melbourne, a member of the committee of management of the Australian Society of Authors, and a former Councillor and Vice-President of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria. Recently the Australian Academy for the Humanities added him to their select group of Honorary Fellows.
“This amazing career and the occasion of his 85th birthday deserves a milestone celebration, and the Royal Historical Society of Victoria is delighted to invite history lovers to join in,” concluded Dr Lemon.

“2012: Time for Change” presents an optimistic visionary alternative to the apocalyptic doom and gloom of most 2012 prophecies and Hollywood blockbusters. Directed by Emmy Award nominee João Amorim, the film follows journalist Daniel Pinchbeck, author of the bestselling 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl, on a quest for a new paradigm that integrates the archaic wisdom of tribal cultures with the scientific method. As conscious agents of evolution, he suggests we can redesign post-industrial society on ecological principles to make a world that works for all. Rather than breakdown and barbarism, 2012 heralds the birth of a regenerative planetary culture where collaboration replaces competition, where exploration of psyche and spirit becomes the new cutting edge, replacing the sterile materialism that has pushed our world to the brink.
Featuring interviews with luminary artists, ecologists, inventors and philosophers including Sting, David Lynch, Ellen Page, Paul Stamets, Gilberto Gil, Shiva Rea, Tiokasin Ghosthorse, Barbara Max Hubbard, Nasseim Haramein, Dennis McKenna, Terrence McKenna and Buckminster Fuller.

An inspiring and personal story about a group of people building sustainable housing in the Baja California peninsula in Mexico. It serves as an introductory guide to building alternative sustainable housing, as well as describing, with the use of animation, how these buildings offer solutions to today’s most important issues like: energy, water, food, shelter, sewerage and recycling. This screening will be the International Premiere of the documentary, and will be introduced by Michael Reynolds the originator of the earthships bio-architecture concept. Reynolds was made famous through the documentary ‘Garbage Warrior’ which first introduced the ‘earthships’ theory to audiences around the world. Since then, the DIY rammed earth building style which incorporates rain water catching and recycling, internal food gardens, compost toilets and optimal solar design has become famous. Reynolds will be in Australia where he will also be conducting a workshop teaching the revolutionary design principles. The film will also be accompanied by a short film produced by the Jack Thompson Foundation showcasing the important groundbreaking work in creating opportunities for self building of community housing in Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory. Melbourne supports the striking workers in India! On February 28, over 100 million Indians will join together and walk off the job in what is likely to be the largest strike of workers the world has ever seen. Workers around the world will be standing in solidarity with those fighting for economic justice in India. In Melbourne we invite all those who support worker’s rights to join together at Fed Square, the site of several inspiring political actions involving Melbourne’s Indian community. The call for the one-day general strike has been given by all of India’s eleven central trade unions and supported by all industrial federations. This strike will affect virtually all major industries in the country. Amongst those on board are public sector banks, port and dock leaders, railways, insurance, road transport, and the energy industry. The different labor unions have specific demands that they want to achieve with the strike. These include bringing contract workers up to the same level of employee protections as permanent workers, extending the minimum wage to cover the entire population, and countering the attacks on unions. India, much like Australia and many other parts of the global economy, has been subjected to an aggressive neoliberal re-structuring. The New Economic and Industrial Policies introduced in 1991 has only entrenched the wealth disparity and aggravated the dire poverty experienced by many Indians. Despite recent year-on-year GDP growth rates of 8% or 9%, more than four in 10 children under five years old are malnourished and many more suffer from stunted growth. In 2010 researchers at Oxford University found that there were more than 410 million people living in poverty in India, more than in the 26 countries of sub-Saharan Africa combined. The poverty has been described as equal to, if not worse than, that of the war-ravaged Democratic Republic of the Congo. This is a stunning indictment of the economic system in India–one of the so-called ‘economic powerhouses’ of the developing world. The neoliberal policies in India, like those in Europe, the United States and Australia, have led to the disappearance of jobs, the erosion of wages and working conditions and attacks on trade union rights. All the while, the number of billionaires in India has grown exponentially. The country has 55 billionaires whose aggregate wealth of $250 billion is equivalent to almost a sixth of the nation’s annual economic output. Simply put, neoliberal economic policy is an open attack on the workers from the bosses. Despite the many damning statistics and the vigorous lobbying from NGOs and unions, it appears that the Indian political establishment is in no mood to change it’s course. It’s time for the workers and the oppressed of India to force their hand and push for economic justice. And it’s happening! Join us on February 28 at Federation Square in a spirit of human rights and international solidarity. www.workerssolidaritymelbourne.org

Only dictatorships ban strikes don't they? Wrong. Australia has so many legal restrictions to stop workers taking meaningful industrial action that the right to strike is effectively illegal. Victorian nurses and state public servants were forced to lift their effective industrial bans. Qantas workers had done very little before being locked out and banned from taking industrial action. Speakers: Len Cooper (Communication Workers Union telecommunications state secretary and founder of right to strike campaign); Tim Gooden (Geelong Trades Hall Council secretary); Paul Gilbert (Australian Nurses Federation), a Baiada chicken factory worker (participant in 2011 strike).
