• 4th anniversary of the death of Mr Ward (27 January)

• 5th anniversary of Queensland Police officer, Chris Hurley, being forced to front the Supreme Court charged with manslaughter and assault (5 February)

• 8th anniversary of the death of TJ Hickey (14 February)

• Stop Aboriginal deaths in custody — implement all 339 recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody

• End privatisation of custodial services — cancel all contracts with G4S, SERCO and other profiteers from incarceration

• Hold the police to account — end the practice of police investigating police.  For an independent enquiry into the death of Terrance Briscoe. Establish elected community based review boards with the full legal and legislative powers to investigate, discipline and charge police, prison and custodial health officers found to be involved in a death in custody, negligence or lack of duty of care

• End the harassment of deaths in custody families. Provide funding for families who have lost a loved one in custody to meet to allow their collective demands to be formulated, including suitable and adequate compensation. Use the $590,000 in fine money to establish a trust to honour the memory of Mr Ward. Erect a plaque at the fence line to remember TJ and publicise that his death was caused by a police chase.

Victorians are invited to take part in a unique celebration of one of Australian folklore’s greatest contributors, as the Royal Historical Society of Victoria presents “The Hugh Anderson Event”.

 

To be held on Tuesday 14 February at 11.30am, guests will be treated to songs by folk legends Danny Spooner, Dave and Lynne Lumsden and Dave de Hugard as we take a look back at Dr Anderson’s extensive achievements and celebrate his 85^th birthday.

 

The event will also see Dr Anderson launch his latest work - “Two axe Mac: the story of Simon McDonald” – and showcase extracts from the book’s companion CD.

 

“Recognised as our greatest authority on the history of Australian folklore, Hugh Anderson’s ground-breaking work really established the study of folklore as a scholarly field in Australia,” noted Dr Andrew Lemon, President of the RHSV.

 

“His expert eye has given us a greater understanding of a huge cast of characters in Australian history, especially poets such as Adam Lindsay Gordon and John Shaw Neilson.

 

“Writing for all audiences and ages, he has compiled more than a dozen monographs, authored eight bibliographies of Australian writers, edited numerous primary sources, provided 13 entries to the Australian Dictionary of Biography and produced 22 textbooks!”

 

Dr Anderson was a founding member of the editorial board of Australian Folklore, a Fellow of the Australian Centre at the University of Melbourne, a member of the committee of management of the Australian Society of Authors, and a former Councillor and Vice-President of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria. Recently the Australian Academy for the Humanities added him to their select group of Honorary Fellows.

 

“This amazing career and the occasion of his 85^th birthday deserves a milestone celebration, and the Royal Historical Society of Victoria is delighted to invite history lovers to join in,” concluded Dr Lemon.

Melbourne supports the striking workers in India!

On February 28, over 100 million Indians will join together and walk off the job in what is likely to be the largest strike of workers the world has ever seen.

Workers around the world will be standing in solidarity with those fighting for economic justice in India. In Melbourne we invite all those who support worker’s rights to join together at Fed Square, the site of several inspiring political actions involving Melbourne’s Indian community.

The call for the one-day general strike has been given by all of India’s eleven central trade unions and supported by all industrial federations. This strike will affect virtually all major industries in the country. Amongst those on board are public sector banks, port and dock leaders, railways, insurance, road transport, and the energy industry.

The different labor unions have specific demands that they want to achieve with the strike. These include bringing contract workers up to the same level of employee protections as permanent workers, extending the minimum wage to cover the entire population, and countering the attacks on unions.

India, much like Australia and many other parts of the global economy, has been subjected to an aggressive neoliberal re-structuring. The New Economic and Industrial Policies introduced in 1991 has only entrenched the wealth disparity and aggravated the dire poverty experienced by many Indians.

Despite recent year-on-year GDP growth rates of 8% or 9%, more than four in 10 children under five years old are malnourished and many more suffer from stunted growth. In 2010 researchers at Oxford University found that there were more than 410 million people living in poverty in India, more than in the 26 countries of sub-Saharan Africa combined. The poverty has been described as equal to, if not worse than, that of the war-ravaged Democratic Republic of the Congo. This is a stunning indictment of the economic system in India–one of the so-called ‘economic powerhouses’ of the developing world.

The neoliberal policies in India, like those in Europe, the United States and Australia, have led to the disappearance of jobs, the erosion of wages and working conditions and attacks on trade union rights. All the while, the number of billionaires in India has grown exponentially. The country has 55 billionaires whose aggregate wealth of $250 billion is equivalent to almost a sixth of the nation’s annual economic output. Simply put, neoliberal economic policy is an open attack on the workers from the bosses.

Despite the many damning statistics and the vigorous lobbying from NGOs and unions, it appears that the Indian political establishment is in no mood to change it’s course. It’s time for the workers and the oppressed of India to force their hand and push for economic justice. And it’s happening!

An intimate and enlightening real food event

The South Melbourne Commons will be having a Food Festival on Sunday 4th March, 2012.
