Hip Hop Corroboree is the official after party for Melbourne Music’s Urban Roots program Saturday afternoon at City Square and is part of Songline’s ongoing commitment to support Aboriginal musicians and to promote reconciliation and healing. Hip Hop Corroboree will feature some of the best up and coming hip hop artists in the country. Radical Son from Sydney will bring his brand of soulful hip hop to Melbourne after wowing audiences around the country with his powerful stage presence. Lady Lash, who is nominated for the Most Promising New Talent for the 2010 Deadly Awards, fuses jazz, soul and hip hop to make the stage her own. The Yung Warriors have been Melbourne’s premier Aboriginal hip hop group for a few years now and have recently graced stages such as the Big Day Out, Rod Laver Arena and Dreamtime at the G opening ceremony. Massive will showcase some of their best talent as well as featuring performers from Polynesia, Africa and beyond. Gardeners will be gathering at Victoria Gardens in High Street, Prahran, to celebrate all things Spring at Spring Into Gardening, one of Council’s most popular events. The Residential Homes project is an attempt to tell the unknown history of the many indigenous people who lived in out-of-home care in the part of Melbourne that is now Whitehorse during the twentieth century. Whitehorse covers Box Hill, Blackburn, Nunawading, Mitcham , Vermont and Vermont South, Burwood and East Burwood. Some of the homes we know about include Burwood Boys Home [later Burwood Childrens Home] Tally Ho Village, Orana, Allambie, Box Hill Boys Home, and Blackburn South Cottages. Pay inequity in Australia is getting worse. In 2009, Equal Pay Day was held on September 1st, symbolising how long into the year a woman must work in order to earn what a man made in the previous financial year. This year, the date was even later: the gender pay gap increased from 17% to 18%. Equal pay was formally “won” in 1960, 1969 and 1972, but it remains as elusive as ever. This discussion circle will explore why the stark gender-based pay disparity exists and persists. We’ll learn about decades of struggle to close the gap. We’ll explore current campaigns and look at what is ultimately needed to achieve equal pay. Everyone is welcome! Nestled in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges lies the studio of the Treefern Potters. A group formed in 2005, of passionate potters and sculptors, from the amateur, the part-time, and the full time ceramic artist, come together at the Ferntree Gully Community Arts Centre for their 5th Annual Exhibition and Open Studio. Held in conjunction with the Dandenong Ranges Pottery & Sculpture Open Studios weekend, visitors will have the opportunity to meet ceramic artists both in their working environment and exhibition space. The potters will be happy to share their love of clay and demonstrate the various techniques and methods used to create the many different forms of ceramic art. The Treefern Potters’ work ranges from tiny native animals to large tribal sculptures; from delicate porcelain vessels to chunky stoneware urns; from simple sushi plates to elaborate tea pots and from intricate jewellery pieces to recycled ceramic wall art and all are available for sale. The weekend will also feature the foothills newest indoor art & craft market. The Treefern Craft Market offers the highest quality, locally hand made art and craft with a variety of items such as soy candles and soaps, patchwork, handmade bags and cards, jewellery, knitted items and much more including face painting. Nestled in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges lies the studio of the Treefern Potters. A group formed in 2005, of passionate potters and sculptors, from the amateur, the part-time, and the full time ceramic artist, come together at the Ferntree Gully Community Arts Centre for their 5th Annual Exhibition and Open Studio. Held in conjunction with the Dandenong Ranges Pottery & Sculpture Open Studios weekend, visitors will have the opportunity to meet ceramic artists both in their working environment and exhibition space. The potters will be happy to share their love of clay and demonstrate the various techniques and methods used to create the many different forms of ceramic art. The Treefern Potters’ work ranges from tiny native animals to large tribal sculptures; from delicate porcelain vessels to chunky stoneware urns; from simple sushi plates to elaborate tea pots and from intricate jewellery pieces to recycled ceramic wall art and all are available for sale. The weekend will also feature the foothills newest indoor art & craft market. The Treefern Craft Market offers the highest quality, locally hand made art and craft with a variety of items such as soy candles and soaps, patchwork, handmade bags and cards, jewellery, knitted items and much more including face painting. Visitors can enjoy Devonshire Teas and a sausage sizzle while enjoying views of the Dandenong Ranges. Use of public space is being restricted by privatisation.Earlier this year, the managementof Barkly Square shopping centre in Brunswick stopped Green Left Weekly from operating its regular Saturday stalls. Acommunity campaign resulted in Green Left Weekly winning limited access. While Green LeftWeekly is happy to allow other communitycampaigns to distribute materials, access to this social space is restricted.
Events at Barkly Square are part of a disturbing patternaround the country. Community is being shut out of ever-diminishing publicareas. Social spaces, such as shopping centres, are being taken over by bigbusiness whose only concern is making a profit. Passing out information, collecting signatures on communitypetitions, distributing election material, holding speakouts or engaging inother activities are essential democratic rights. People increasingly find thatthe spaces where the public congregate are defined as corporate no-go zones.Even where permission is given by the gatekeepers, requirements — such asdemands for huge public liability insurance coverage — rule out many communitygroups. A panel of community activists and experts will describe howthey see free speech, freedom of assembly and the right to organise beingeroded by this creeping privatisation. They’ll discuss current campaigns andexplore the tools for resistance that community members can use to reclaim ourspaces. Brunswick has a proud history of community activism to defenddemocratic grassroots organising. World Vegan Day, one of the most eagerly anticipated cultural events in Melbourne is occurring on October 31 at the Abbotsford Convent. World Vegan Day 2010 Melbourne is a chance for those interested in food, the environment and animal welfare to explore a healthy lifestyle that is becoming increasingly popular. Here at UGC HQ, we disagree that Halloween is just an American tradition, in fact, we firmly believe it deserves to be celebrated. After all, dressing up in outrageous costumes and planning never before experienced events is what we do best! This time around, guests will be transported to a perilous world, where criminals and gangs rule, and Law and Order is nonexistent. It’s dangerous to walk down the street, let alone venture out to a film screening in a mysterious location, so we strongly urge all guests to take extra caution and leave any valuables at home. You should come in costume, 90s Goth or your Halloween finest, to ensure you blend In. Trust us, this is one screening where you won’t want to stick out.
We can’t reveal the secret location of course, but we can promise you these screenings will sell out fast, so make sure to purchase your tickets early to avoid disappointment.
