Stroke can affect anyone, at any age and stage of life. Stroke is the largest cause of disability in Australia, and the second largest cause of death. It can be an extremely traumatising and life altering occurrence. The Stroke Association of Victoria presents a photography exhibition exploring life after stroke, and the encouragement and inspiration tha many Victorian stroke survivors have found during their recovery process. Life doesn't not end after a traumatic event, it is only changed. The Stroke Association of Victoria offers and provides ongoing support, advice, referrals and information to Victoria stroke survivors, their families and carers. We encourage and support people in reclaiming life after stroke. The most significant service that is provided are the many stroke peer support groups. These groups offer community, support and encouragement by peers who's lives have also been affected by stroke. 'Recovery' is an exhibition of photographs taken by Stroke Association of Victoria's stroke peer support group members, sharing their stories and experiences of inspiration in their lives after stroke. It is our pleasure to extend an invitation to all Victorians to attend this unique and powerful exhibition

Rebuilding the Refugee Rights Movement
Ramesh Fernandez, RISE Refugee Sue Bolton, Refugee Action Collective Stuart Harrison, Resistance
6.30pm Wednesday May 19
Rudd went to the 2007 election with the promise of a humane refugee policy. He did so because the refugee rights movement that emerged in the Howard years became powerful enough to influence politics in Australia.
Labor’s decision to suspend processing new refugees arriving by boat from Afghanistan and Sri Lanka is a continuation of the previous Howard Government’s racist refugee policies.
Both major parties are scape-goating refugees to distract attention from their neoliberal policies.
All welcome for this important discussion.

May 20 - Day of Action in Solidarity with the people of ThailandMelbourne solidarity rally
Thursday 20 May at 12:30 pm
Soldiers - Don't shoot ! This is a time of crisis for workers in Thailand. The Abhisit government must go. It is the 6th time in the past forty years that the Thai government has used military force to suppress popular discontent against the inequality and corruption of Thai society. Thursday 20 May is the anniversary of the end of Black May in 1992, when the Thai military attacked hundreds of thousands of pro democracy demonstrators in the centre of Bangkok. The demonstrators resisted the attacks, and on 20 May 1992 the King intervened against the government. We stand with the working people of Thailand. All workers in the region and globally should support protest actions and international industrial action and solidarity to assist workers in Thailand. Click here for a sample union letter to send to the Thai government Click here for the AAWL statement on Thailand: Workers Organise to Win ! *WARNING - LEAKING DOCUMENT THIS PRESS RELEASE MAY BE CONTAMINATED BY ‘CHEMICAL AGENTS’ A MELBOURNE EXHIBITION BY THE COLLECTIVE A-17P (Artists of the 17th Parallel). website: http://a-17p.blogspot.com Five artists linked by the Vietnam War raise questions on the usage of chemical warfare from WWII to today's conflict in the Middle East.
contact:
Kelly Manning on mob: 0431 157 331
A-17P Members are: DOMINIC GOLDING (melb), MAI LONG (syd), KELLY MANNING(melb) & VAN THANH RUDD(melb) with special guest artist Kristine McCarroll (france/australia)
Chemical warfare has been implemented as a tool of destruction on a mind-boggling scale from the Vietnam War to the Middle East conflict, which still rages today. ‘CHEMICAL AGENTS’ asks why? This new contribution of work includes installation, painting, and three-dimensional objects and delves into the individual psyches of five contemporary Australian artists, on themes of chemical warfare and the enduring nature of human destruction at our own hands. Dominic, Mai, Kelly and Van formed the A-17P Collective early in 2009. They recognise art as a mechanism that is sensitive to everyday realities. Last month, Underground Cinema brought you a sold out premiere screening of an international comedy, this time; we’re giving you an AAA pass to one of Melbourne’s hottest gigs, in a secret location of course! This isn’t your average film screening; it’s a midyear party, complete with groupies, uptight music execs and awesome live acts. Melbourne is famous for its live music scene, and for nurturing home grown talent such as The Living End, Jet and Midnight Juggernauts. Since music is such an integral part of Melbourne‘s arts and cultural scene, we decided it was about time we held a music inspired screening. In true Underground Cinema style, this event will completely transport guests to “a fully immersive world inspired by the film.” Next event Date: 5th June 2010 Time: 8pm Location: To be revealed 3 days before Theme: Backstage Price: $25 Dress: Rock star or groupies On the MP3: Indie Rock Bring: Your lighters Genre: Documentary Purchase tickets: http://www.moshtix.com.au/event.aspx?id=37181

Tanaka-san Will Not Do Callisthenics screens as part of Asialink’s Winter Writing Series followed by green tea, sake and a Q+A with director Maree Delofski, June 10 at Sidney Myer Asia Centre.
Tanaka-san Will Not Do Callisthenics follows Tanaka Tetsuro, whose refusal to do early-morning company callisthenics led to his sacking. He’s since maintained a daily protest vigil outside the company gates for more than 25 years. In the process, this simple act has exposed the increasingly authoritarian nature of Japanese corporate management systems.
The film’s humour, poignancy and optimism create a complex portrait of an idiosyncratic Japanese nonconformist. Its resonances reverberate beyond Japan into our increasingly globalised world.
Maree Delofski is a documentary film writer/director who has made several award winning films including The Trouble with Merle and A Calcutta Christmas. Her films have screened nationally and internationally at festivals and on television. Maree was awarded an Asialink Literature Residency in India (2000) where she researched and wrote the script for The Trouble with Merle. The script was shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards, and the resulting film won the NSW Premier’s History Award.

Capitalism: A
Love Story
a film by Michael Moore Thursday 10 June 6.30pm Clarrie Wohlers Centre 51 Albert Street - Brunswick From Michael Moore, the maker of Roger and Me, Sicko and Fahrenheit 9/11, comes a documentary examining how the recent economic crisis affected ordinary people in the United States. At the behest of the 'free market', people lost their homes and their jobs. Banks got bailed out, but people continue to suffer. With the Greek economic crisis now threatening to bring down the European Union and workers being told they must accept pay cuts, welfare cuts and a new round of austerity measures, this documentary is still as timely as ever. It's time to ask, is the problem a few bad executives at Goldman Sachs or capitalism itself? Hosted by Trent Hawkins, Socialist Alliance candidate for the Federal Seat of Wills (how to get there: catch the number 1 or 8 tram along Lygon Street, get off at Albert Street and walk 3 minutes eastwards) Entry by donation Information: 9639 8622 Organised by Socialist Alliance (northern suburbs branch) and Green Left Weekly

Melbourne Anti Intervention Collective Presents....
a Public Meeting
On the site of the famous Wave Hill Walk off, Aboriginal people are
again working for rations.
As part of the Northern Territory Intervention, Aboriginal people have
had their welfare quarantined, their land “compulsorily acquired” and
government business managers in control of communities. Community
run programs were cut, and with them thousands of Jobs for Aboriginal
people.
Now, as part of work for the dole schemes, Aboriginal workers in the
NT are working full-time for dole payments that are income-managed,
meaning they are effectively working for rations — returning people to
'50s era racial discrimination.
Peter Inverway, a builder from Kalkaringi, works under this system. He
will be speaking to this public meeting to expose the reality of this
scheme and the racism of the NT Intervention.
These workers see this rations work and the Intervention in general as
an attempt to make life in remote communities impossible, and to
assimilate Aboriginal people. Across the Northern Territory, CDEP
workers are joining unions and seeking support from workers and
unionists in the cities to fight this racist use of Aboriginal people as
cheap labour.
Come to this public meeting to find out more about the CDEP Work for
Basics cards, and show your support for the fight for Aboriginal rights.
