The Hillside Film Festival (formally the Blue Dandenongs Film Festival) is once again running. Following its previous success, this year's festival is running over two, which means there is more local talent, more live bands, and more garden parties all in a beautiful green leafy setting to be enjoyed.

This year we are lucky enough to be screening the cult hit documentary Surfing 50 States, which tells the story of two Aussie mates who travel to America with the goal of surfing in every state- despite the fact that neither can surf very well! What follows is a hilarious journey where the boys take desperate measures to achieve their goal- whether it be by surfing down a 15 foot pile of potatoes in Idaho, being dragged on a surfboard behind a truck in Texas, or conquering the frigid waves of Alaska.

In addition, this year we have eight short films which showcase young local talent and the future of the Australian film industry. We have the opportunity to see the best young talent of any genre, any style and any budget. Highlights definitely include the mockumentary interviewer Sam Tool, who frightens Hamish and Andy and argues with Rove, and the black comedy 'Choke' which proves you should never mistake a Hungry, Hungry Hippo ball with a Jila Mint.

Spain plans to install enough concentrated solar thermal in the next three years to power half of Victoria, with capacity six times greater than this in development. http://www.theage.com.au/national/zero-emissions-possible--at-40bn-a-yea...

The report argues that it is smarter to invest $36 billion a year for a decade to produce an independent, sustainable and wealth-creating zero emission economy, than to continue to haemorrhage billions of dollars in oil imports. According to Goldman Sachs, Australia will be importing $65 billion a year in oil by 2015, just five years from now. http://www.heraldsun.com.au/opinion/hard-sell-for-fossils-and-fools/stor...

Dine at your local Indian restaurant on Wednesday 24 February 2010.

Protest racially motivated violence in Melbourne.

Let’s  find a way to show support for the Indian community and signal that we will not turn a blind eye to violence in our city.

This violence threatens all Melburnians’ sense of safety and pride in their home. I want the Melbourne Indian community -and all immigrant communities – to know that they are welcome and entitled to feel safe here.

How cool would it be if Melbourne displayed a show of force by all going out and eating Indian food on a certain night, to embrace and show solidarity with our local Indian community?

Let’s do it!

Register your participation in 10 seconds.

In November last year, the central leader of the Venezuelan revolution, Hugo Chavez, proposed "to convene political parties and currents to create the Fifth Socialist International as a new organization that fits the time and the challenge in which we live, and that can become an instrument of unification and coordination of the struggle of peoples to save this planet".

As the epicentre of a continent-wide anti-capitalist rebellion, the people of Venezuela are well placed to shoulder the leadership of creating an international front of resistance and opening a new era of international socialist discussion and collaboration.

This forum will include speakers from a range of left organisations in Australia, to discuss the meaning and significance of the call for a 5th International.

Speakers include:
Guido Huerta, from the Chilean Communist Party in Australia

Inside the Revolution: A Journey into the Heart of Venezuela
(Director Pablo Navarrete, 65mins, Alborada Films, 2009)

February 2009 marked 10 years since Hugo Chavez took office, following a landslide election victory, and launched his revolution to bring radical change to Venezuela. While wildly popular with many in the country, Chavez's policies and his strongly-worded criticisms of the U.S. government have also made him powerful enemies, both at home and abroad, especially in the media.

Filmed in Caracas in November 2008, on the eve of the 10th anniversary of Chavez's controversial presidency, this feature-length documentary takes a journey into the heart of Venezuela's revolution to listen to the voices of the people driving the process forward.

"This is a rare film about Venezuela, a country in extraordinary transition. Watch this film because it is honest and fair and respectful of those who want to be told the truth about an epic attempt, flaws and all, to claim back the humanity of ordinary people."

- John Pilger (Journalist, author and documentary filmmaker)

"A lively, well-researched documentary which pulls of that most difficult of tasks - an honest account of the achievements and the weaknesses of the Chavez government."

- Sue Branford (Journalist, former Latin American analyst for the BBC World Service)

::: Sunday 28th February, 2.30pm-5.30pm

Film starts 3pm

Entry: $8/$5 (concession) on guestlist. Email: info[at]alborada.net to be added to the guestlist. Otherwise entry is: $10/$7(concession)

The screening will be introduced by Colm McNaughton (independent journalist), who will also chair a Q&A with the director after the screening.

Pissed off about sexism, racism and homophobia? Worried about climate change? Appalled by the growing lack of housing affordability and inadequate tenants rights? Grossed out by the cost of childcare? Fed up with ridiculous workloads on the job?

There is an alternative to a world where war seems endless and profit rules. It’s called socialism — the replacement of capitalist rule by a genuine workers’ democracy — and it will guarantee full economic, social, political and legal equality to all who are exploited, oppressed and repelled by the existing system.

You are invited to be part of a study circle where no prior knowledge is necessary. Bring your questions and your ideas!

Sweet Cecelia Entertainment proudly presents a rockin’ show featuring Low Rent, Spearmint Furand Andrew J Shepherd Saturday March 6th at Spenser’s Live.

Low Rent are analternative/county/rock band from Melbourne. After forming in 2007 as a three-piecefolk band, they have transformed themselves in both size and sound to thecurrent five-piece line-up. With comparisons to The Waifs and John Butler, theyare one band to keep an eye out for! Lead by brilliant songwriter and guitaristDan Swan he brings high energy and quirkiness to each of the shows. His countrified rock songs are interpretedbeautifully by a band of experienced musicians, all bringing inspiration fromvarious sources.

Their debut EP ‘Waiting to Fall’ which was released in2008 has had a great response fromfans and media alike. Theonly downside being the record leaves the listener hungry for more. Fresh fromrecent gigs including The Melbourne Zoo Twilights and The Edinburgh Castle, thegroup continues to gain attention and take on the role of a hard working band. Check out their recent rockumentary Living Low Renton YouTube.

Spearmint Fur is singersongwriter Zadia Lenders, a multi instrumentalist who has been writing songs formany moons and has been described as an inter-continental gypsy due to all herglobal wanderings.  Zadia has alsoshared the stage with the likes of Throwing Muses, Swervedriver, JuliannaHatfield and has been busy promoting self-produced album ‘Immune’.

Andrew J Shepherd fromJakk’s Azimuth writes beautiful melodies with political importance. He bringsforth a unique blend of progressive, acoustic folk/pop. Comedown for a great night of rock, alternative, folk entertainment.

SALT OF THE EARTH

Banned in 1954 during the McCarthyite witch hunts for its radical political content, Salt of the Earth, tells  the story of a  strike led by Mexican workers  for equal pay and safer working conditions, against a powerful American mining company.

After the striking men are viciously beaten and demoralised, their wives, mothers and daughters  take over the picket line, fighting not only for the working rights of their husbands & sons, but also for their own rights as women to equality and freedom.

Based on the 1951 Silver City mining strike, Salt of the Earth is a timeless film about the struggle of men and women for equality, dignity & human rights.

The successful fight to decriminalise abortionin Victoria put abortion rights back onto the national stage. No sooner wasVictoria's reform passed in October 2008 than the Catholic Church beganpreparations to challenge it. Six months later, the Queensland police charged a19-year-old Cairns woman and her partner under the state's 1899 Criminal Codefor procuring her abortion. This year, through February and March, anorchestrated targeting by religious zealots of clinics in Melbourne, Sydney andBrisbane further signals a resurgence of coordinated assaults on women'srights. The abortion wars have reignited.

Last month, Radical Women and other grassrootsabortion rights activists from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland met inSydney to analyse developments and chart a course for a coordinated nationalcampaign. RW will report back from this historic gathering. Come along to hearabout it, share your ideas and be part of the action!

The discussion will be held at SolidaritySalon, 580 Sydney Road, Brunswick (easily accessible on Tram #19, near Blyth orStewart Street stops, and Upfield train line, near Anstey station; plenty ofparking off Staley Street). A refreshing dinner, with vegetarian option, willbe served at 6.30 pm for an $8.00 donation.

Communities in the western suburbs have a long history of diversity, multiculturalism and solidarity.

The western suburbs has been enriched and strengthened by the diversity of migrant communities who have made it their home - Greek, Italian, Asian, Latin American, African, Arabic, Indian and many others.  Our communities have always condemned racism and stood by each other.  We will again oppose the recent racist attacks and rally around the Indian community.

Imagine booking tickets to see a movie, but not knowing where it’s playing or what film you’re going to see. All you’re given is the date of March 20th, the theme ‘NYC Summer of ‘94’, and the option to dress accordingly. You arrive at the secret location, decked out in your finest ghetto gold, to discover a party atmosphere with hundreds of film-goers in costumes, and performing artists and musicians sprinkled throughout the crowd. There’s a buzz of anticipation in the air, as guests try to piece together cryptic clues to uncover what film they’re about to see. A first of its kind, the secret screenings aim to create an immersive atmosphere where film, music and art collide to create an unforgettable movie-going experience. Still in its infancy and occurring periodically throughout the year, Underground Cinema is already drawing big crowds and rave reviews. The Vine described it as “a cinema experience like no other”, while the popular Curios Kate blog said it was “an unforgettable evening of cinematic and live performance pleasures”.
