Australia Premier Corazon del Tiempo / The Heart of Time New International Bookshop, Trades Hall, 7:00pm 11th February 2009 Fundraiser for the Zapatista Community Hacia la Esperanza The Zapatistas, masked rebels of the Lacondon Jungle have revealed themselves in the award winning 2009 film directed by Alberto Cortés: Corazon del Tiempo In La Esperanza de San Pedro, Chiapas, in the midst of the Zapatista struggle, Sonia, a member of the community, is about to be married. Her dowry, a cow, has been delivered. Her boyfriend’s family has been spoken to… However, Sonia is in love with another: an insurgent from the Zapatista EZLN. Now, the EZLN has a problem on their hands and the entire community must come together so that the voice of its members can be heard and respected; and so that duty can be overcome by love. This screening is a fundraiser for the indigenous Zapatista communities that feature in the film. Since 1994 these communities have been supporting themselves autonomously from the Mexican Government. Despite being amongst the poorest people in the world, they run their own schools, hospitals and agricultural training centres which they make available for all people in the region, not just their supporters. Because they refuse to deal with corrupt government officials, Zapatista communities suffer from harassment by paramilitaries and the army. Political and material support is urgently needed to defend their project of local democracy. The film will be screened for the first time in Australia at: New International Bookshop, basement, Trades Hall, 54 Victoria St Carlton, on Thursday 11th at 7:00pm. The film and its context will be introduced by PhD candidate Tristan Epstein, recently returned from fieldwork in Southern Mexico. For enquiries please contact epstein@riseup.net

Pissed off about sexism, racism and homophobia? Worried about climate change? Appalled by the growing lack of housing affordability and inadequate tenants rights? Grossed out by the cost of childcare? Fed up with ridiculous workloads on the job? There is an alternative to a world where war seems endless and profit rules. It’s called socialism — the replacement of capitalist rule by a genuine workers’ democracy — and it will guarantee full economic, social, political and legal equality to all who are exploited, oppressed and repelled by the existing system. You are invited to be part of a study circle where no prior knowledge is necessary. Bring your questions and your ideas! The Hillside Film Festival (formally the Blue Dandenongs Film Festival) is once again running. Following its previous success, this year's festival is running over two, which means there is more local talent, more live bands, and more garden parties all in a beautiful green leafy setting to be enjoyed. This year we are lucky enough to be screening the cult hit documentary Surfing 50 States, which tells the story of two Aussie mates who travel to America with the goal of surfing in every state- despite the fact that neither can surf very well! What follows is a hilarious journey where the boys take desperate measures to achieve their goal- whether it be by surfing down a 15 foot pile of potatoes in Idaho, being dragged on a surfboard behind a truck in Texas, or conquering the frigid waves of Alaska. In addition, this year we have eight short films which showcase young local talent and the future of the Australian film industry. We have the opportunity to see the best young talent of any genre, any style and any budget. Highlights definitely include the mockumentary interviewer Sam Tool, who frightens Hamish and Andy and argues with Rove, and the black comedy 'Choke' which proves you should never mistake a Hungry, Hungry Hippo ball with a Jila Mint. There'll be plenty of time for questions and discussion, and BZE campaigners can provide informatoin on how to get involved in the work of this inspiring organisation. For more information or to RSVP call Ellen Roberts on 0408 583 694. See you there! Climate Action Moreland more: Beyond Zero Emissions' Zero Carbon Australia 2020 (ZCA2020) Stationary Energy Plan http://beyondzeroemissions.org/node/241 Spain plans to install enough concentrated solar thermal in the next three years to power half of Victoria, with capacity six times greater than this in development. http://www.theage.com.au/national/zero-emissions-possible--at-40bn-a-yea... The report argues that it is smarter to invest $36 billion a year for a decade to produce an independent, sustainable and wealth-creating zero emission economy, than to continue to haemorrhage billions of dollars in oil imports. According to Goldman Sachs, Australia will be importing $65 billion a year in oil by 2015, just five years from now. http://www.heraldsun.com.au/opinion/hard-sell-for-fossils-and-fools/stor...

In
November last year, the central leader of the Venezuelan revolution,
Hugo Chavez, proposed "to convene political parties and currents to
create the Fifth Socialist International as a new organization that
fits the time and the challenge in which we live, and that can become
an instrument of unification and coordination of the struggle of
peoples to save this planet". As the epicentre of a continent-wide anti-capitalist rebellion, the people of Venezuela are well placed to shoulder the leadership of creating an international front of resistance and opening a new era of international socialist discussion and collaboration. This forum will include speakers from a range of left organisations in Australia, to discuss the meaning and significance of the call for a 5th International.
Speakers include: Thursday, Feb 25 @ 6.30pm Direct Action Centre, VictoriaTrades Hall - cnr of Lygon and Victoria St, Carlton. The Direct Action Centre is located in the basement of Victorian Trades Hall (next to New International Bookshop). Victoria St Entrance. Start: 19:00

Inside the Revolution: A Journey into the Heart of Venezuela (Director Pablo Navarrete, 65mins, Alborada Films, 2009) February 2009 marked 10 years since Hugo Chavez took office, following a landslide election victory, and launched his revolution to bring radical change to Venezuela. While wildly popular with many in the country, Chavez's policies and his strongly-worded criticisms of the U.S. government have also made him powerful enemies, both at home and abroad, especially in the media. Filmed in Caracas in November 2008, on the eve of the 10th anniversary of Chavez's controversial presidency, this feature-length documentary takes a journey into the heart of Venezuela's revolution to listen to the voices of the people driving the process forward. "This is a rare film about Venezuela, a country in extraordinary transition. Watch this film because it is honest and fair and respectful of those who want to be told the truth about an epic attempt, flaws and all, to claim back the humanity of ordinary people." - John Pilger (Journalist, author and documentary filmmaker) "A lively, well-researched documentary which pulls of that most difficult of tasks - an honest account of the achievements and the weaknesses of the Chavez government." - Sue Branford (Journalist, former Latin American analyst for the BBC World Service) ::: Sunday 28th February, 2.30pm-5.30pm Film starts 3pm Entry: $8/$5 (concession) on guestlist. Email: info[at]alborada.net to be added to the guestlist. Otherwise entry is: $10/$7(concession) The screening will be introduced by Colm McNaughton (independent journalist), who will also chair a Q&A with the director after the screening. Grossed out by the cost of childcare? Fed up with ridiculous workloads on the job? There is an alternative to a world where war seems endless and profit rules.
