The Collingwood Toy Library has engaged some of Melbourne’s most pre-eminent child development experts to come and speak with parents and carers of young children about the value of play.

With the support of the City of Yarra the library will be hosting a series of seminars between October and December that encourage parents to learn more about how crucial play is to their child’s development.

Guest speakers will focus on different elements of play, including using play to address behavioural issues or to stimulate a child’s language development or interest in art. Play is critical to a child’s development. It’s how they learn. These seminars will assist in giving parents the knowledge and confidence to help their children grow and develop important life skills. Our expert speakers will offer parents some practical ideas and suggestions for playing with their child and there will be plenty of toys from the library on hand to help illustrate the points being made.

The seminars are free of charge and open to all.

They will be held at the Edinburgh Gardens Community Room from 7:30pm on 29th October, 12th November, 25th November and 9th December.

Vermont South Community House Toy Library is a non profit, volunteer run organisation which services 120 families in the area.

The Australian Centre for Democracy and Justice, in conjunction with Chincilla Media, are running a series of workshops to promote open source  software and it's various applications in a variety of fields.

The world of free, open source and community developed technologies is rapidly expanding, offering massive potential for free and low cost solutions, saving money and supporting collaborative projects run by enthusiasts around the globe.

Despite recent widespread adoption of Open Source technologies, the world is still a confusing one, clouded by jargon and stalwart tech heads resenting letting newbies in.

The arts, non-profit and small business worlds could especially
benefit from adopting some of the hundreds of tools out there, not only to help frequently tight budgets but to also encourage the work of similarly minded people in a different medium. The workshop intends to guide participants through the pitfalls of adopting open source technology, outlining the problems, difficulties and solutions in a friendly and understandable way, presented by individuals who have
been through the same experiences and are knowledgeable in the worlds of art, running non-profits / small businesses and technology.

Picture This is an exhibition giving TAC clients the opportunity to share their experiences of road trauma through art. The exhibition is for people who were artists before their accident, have taken up art since or have included art therapy in their rehabilitation.

This is the first time the TAC has held an art exhibition for clients. Several of the artists have significant injuries from road trauma, including quadriplegia and acquired brain injuries (ABI). Exhibition visitors can vote for their favourite works in the People's Choice Award.

The exhibition is in Geelong from November 11 to 17 (TAC building, Level 2, 60 Brougham St, Geelong) and in Melbourne from November 20 to 29, at 15 William Street.

Scientists are predicting seas will rise globally by more than a metre by the end of this century, and perhaps much more. For example, melting of the Greenland ice sheet is accelerating, it contains the equivalent of about seven metres of sea-level rise. Around the world many thousands of communities will be lost, millions of people will be displaced, and the map of the continents will be changed forever.

Walk to the eastern side of Port Phillip Bay in Victoria, marking the one metre line above the current sea level to highlight the impacts of sea level rise on people, communities and landscapes along the way. Sorrento - Port Melbourne, November 21 - 27
We aim to walk between 15 and 20 kilometres a day, and we welcome local people and organisations to join us for sections of the walk. We will hold a number of public forums on the way (possibly one in the southern Peninsula, one in Frankston, one in St Kilda). We aim to finish the walk at Port Melbourne, where we will hold a press conference.

The walk has been initiated by Friends of the Earth Melbourne in partnership with the Victorian Climate Action Centre.

After the successful Green Renters workshop at the Melbourne Social Forum in April we will be starting a run of three at CERES in East Brunswick from the 5th of September.

The workshops are a practical and lively discussion of ideas on greening up your rental property. We step through the typical rental property area by area, looking in detail at what you can do as well as general lifestyle changes. There will be demonstrations and samples of some of our favourite recipes and tutorials to try and take away, showing you just how easy it is to achieve noticeable and tasty results!

For those of you who are feeling the morning zest, the walk will be continuing around the Koomba Park boardwalk. After walking up an appetite, a scrumptious sausage sizzle and cool refreshing drink will be available, as well as plenty to do and many competitions to be won!! Prizes will be awarded to the best dressed dog, dog and owner lookalikes, and the cutest puppy. There will also be a raffle and plenty of spot prizes.

Gary Presland is an archaeologist and historian and the author of six works of non-fiction, including Aboriginal Melbourne: The lost lands of the Kulin people and the award-winning The Place for a Village. He will talk about the circumstances that led to the writing of these books and others, and the actual process of writing such works.

"All that is left of Batman's Hill is its name. As paintings from the 1840s show, a prominent hill did once exist not far from what is now Southern Cross station. However, the growth of the railway system in the mid-19thcentury led to the elimination of the hill on which Batman's homestead once stood. Other significant changes to the natural landscape of what is now Melbourne include the removal of two bends in the Yarra near the Botanic Gardens and the creation of two islands in the river. These are just a few examples of the "lost landscape" and vanished ecosystems that Gary Presland so eloquently reconstructs in this illuminating natural history of Melbourne at the time of European settlement. However, this is much more than an exploration of how man shaped the landscape. It also shows how the rocks, soil, water, weather, flora and fauna influenced the growth and shape of the city itself." Picture This is an exhibition giving TAC clients the opportunity to share their experiences of road trauma through art. The exhibition is for people who were artists before their accident, have taken up art since or have included art therapy in their rehabilitation.

This is the first time the TAC has held an art exhibition for clients. Several of the artists have significant injuries from road trauma, including quadriplegia and acquired brain injuries (ABI). Exhibition visitors can vote for their favourite works in the People's Choice Award.

The exhibition is in Geelong from November 11 to 17 (TAC building, Level 2, 60 Brougham St, Geelong) and in Melbourne from November 20 to 29, at 15 William Street.

SEA LEVEL RISE WALK  - 'Port Phillip Rising'

21- 27 November 2009

Scientists are predicting seas will rise globally by more than a metre by the end of this century, and perhaps much more. For example, melting of the Greenland ice sheet is accelerating, it contains the equivalent of about seven metres of sea-level rise. Around the world many thousands of communities will be lost, millions of people will be displaced, and the map of the continents will be changed forever.

Walk to the eastern side of Port Phillip Bay in Victoria, marking the one metre line above the current sea level to highlight the impacts of sea level rise on people, communities and landscapes along the way. Sorrento - Port Melbourne, November 21 - 27
We aim to walk between 15 and 20 kilometres a day, and we welcome local people and organisations to join us for sections of the walk. We will hold a number of public forums on the way (possibly one in the southern Peninsula, one in Frankston, one in St Kilda). We aim to finish the walk at Port Melbourne, where we will hold a press conference.

The walk has been initiated by Friends of the Earth Melbourne in partnership with the Victorian Climate Action Centre.

The spirit of Eureka rebellion lives in today's battles of ordinary people!

Join the 2009 Eureka Stockade anniversary rally on Friday 27 November, 5.30pm on the steps of the State library, Swanston street.

?This year's anniversary commemoration will draw on the continuing spirit of Eureka rebellion in today's battles of ordinary people for justice and democratic rights. The battle started 155 years ago is not finished.??

A mock up contemporary Eureka Stockade will be constructed on the steps of the State Library with banners, placards and flags inside the Stockade - demands will include abolishing the ABCC, working people's rights to health and safety, renewable energy, human rights for refugees, democratic rights of communities, etc.

Speakers: ?Fr. Bob Maguire, ?Dave Noonan?, Rob Stary, ?Margaret Williamson (Eureka descendent who will also briefly talk on "Harmonisation" and OHS)?, Pamela Curr (Asylum Seekers Resource Centre), ?David Spratt (Environment Action Centre), ?Gerry Conlon (Guildford 4) and Paddy Hill (Birmingham 6).

??Unions and community groups are invited to bring union flags and banners to the stockade.

Anyone affected by alcohol, or just curious, is welcome to attend the weekend which includes AA meetings, Alanon meetings, trivia night and live music.
