Come along to a fundraiser concert for the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre, on Thursday the 8th of October from 9pm till 11.45pm at The Evelyn Hotel, 351 Brunswick Street Fitzroy. Featuring local musicians Cuba is Japan, Genevieve & Jezabel, and Mike Barnes. The ASRC was established in June 2001, and has become the largest provider of aid, advocacy and health services for asylum seekers in Australia. They work directly with asylum seekers, both living in our community and detention, to provide direct aid and support as they seek refugee status in Australia. Moira Rayner - Human Rights Advocate and former Equal Opportunity Commissioner will facilitate this forum to discuss the increasing regulation and control of public behaviour in Victoria. Peace, Propaganda and the Holy Land explores how America’s foreign policy interests work in combination with Israeli public relations strategies to influence US news reporting about the Middle East conflict. Directors Sut Jhally and Bathsheba Ratzkoff combine American and British TV news clips with interviews with a range analysts, journalists and political activists such as Noam Chomsky, Hanan Ashrawi and Robert Fisk, to explore how US media coverage about the Israel-Palestine conflict is distorted and Israel’s brutal occupation of the Palestinian people remains hidden in the news media. Green New Deal: Ecology, Economy, Democracy 24-25 October 2009 at The University of Melbourne Planning the green future. Climate crisis, financial crisis, energy crisis, poverty crisis, biodiversity crisis.... This conference is generating a lot of discussion in the community and many people have already indicated their interest. The conference has limited places available. We would love to see as many Greens members attend as possible. Special side events are going to be held for members and supporters to start working on the federal election. Workshops may also be run on how to start a ‘neighbour to neighbour’ campaign to get more people acting on climate change and voting green. The 5th Fair Play Cheap Thrills Futsal Soccer Competition is happening once again at Clifton Tennis Club opposite Clifton Hill station on Saturday October 24. The 16 team tournament raises funds, on and off pitch, for Happy Football Cambodia Australia and the Collingwood Allstars Football program. The mixed teams come from all corners of the local community, making it a fun and active day for everyone! With a bar, coffee shop and café and music keeping the players and supporters warm whilst also contributing to the fund raising, the day long competition boasts some great prizes and strong support including The City of Yarra. Kicking off at midday, the teams are competing for the Etiko trophy, and the games are overseen by referees from FutsalOz. Etiko, who are committed to encouraging Fair Trade and the removal of childfree labour, pride themselves on producing high quality sporting goods and help sell the products to assist those children in developing countries across the world. FutsalOz are the most prominent body for the 5-a-side sport, running leagues around Melbourne and assisting in rules etc As well as the trophy and medals, the winners get a slab of Coopers and tickets to catch Melbourne Victory in action. Other prizes include Football Federation Victoria footballs, Jaspers coffee hamper, Soccer Fever vouchers and Etiko Sports vouchers. Coopers are once again donating beer to be sold at the bar, Jaspers the coffee for the day and local DJs their time and tunes to keep the day rolling along. There are kids activities provided by Kellys Sports too in the huge inflatable pitch! Expect market stalls and other suprises too... THE SOUND OF 350 TEAM ARE GEARED UP AND READY TO TAKE THE STAGE!
On October 24th 2009 at 4PM, Ceres Community Environment Park will be hosting a music event featuring musical acts and entertainment coming together to raise awareness of climate change. Acts include local artists Jumbledat, Goodnight Owl, The Delivery Boy, Marble Sharps and much more! The actionday has been organised as part of the 350.org international day of climate change action, giving the local community a chance to show their support. 350.org is an international campaign dedicated to building a movement to unite the world around solutions to the climate change crisis. The focus is on the number 350--as in parts per million, the level scientists have identified as the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere. But 350 is more than a number--it's a symbol of where we need to head as a planet. As part of a world-wide visual petition, lanterns will be distributed to patrons to form the number ‘350’ for an aerial night shot after the event. The images collected from around the globe will be delivered to world leaders and media to show how unified the climate change movement really is. Green New Deal: Ecology, Economy, Democracy 24-25 October 2009 at The University of Melbourne Planning the green future. Climate crisis, financial crisis, energy crisis, poverty crisis, biodiversity crisis.... This conference is generating a lot of discussion in the community and many people have already indicated their interest. The conference has limited places available. We would love to see as many Greens members attend as possible. Special side events are going to be held for members and supporters to start working on the federal election. Workshops may also be run on how to start a ‘neighbour to neighbour’ campaign to get more people acting on climate change and voting green. Reclaim the Night is an annual march aiming to highlight the prevalence of violence against women, challenging existing attitudes to sexual assault and celebrating womens strength and survival.
An autonomous march will begin from 8pm.

The Collingwood Toy Library has engaged some of Melbourne’s most pre-eminent child development experts to come and speak with parents and carers of young children about the value of play.
With the support of the City of Yarra the library will be hosting a series of seminars between October and December that encourage parents to learn more about how crucial play is to their child’s development. Guest speakers will focus on different elements of play, including using play to address behavioural issues or to stimulate a child’s language development or interest in art. Play is critical to a child’s development. It’s how they learn. These seminars will assist in giving parents the knowledge and confidence to help their children grow and develop important life skills. Our expert speakers will offer parents some practical ideas and suggestions for playing with their child and there will be plenty of toys from the library on hand to help illustrate the points being made. The seminars are free of charge and open to all. They will be held at the Edinburgh Gardens Community Room from 7:30pm on 29th October, 12th November, 25th November and 9th December.
