The Water Dreamers Michael Cathcart @ Underground Talk 6 for 6:30pm Wednesday 2 September New International Bookshop, Trades Hall Cnr Victoria & Lygon Sts, Carlton The Water Dreamers is the story of the settlement of Australia: of the scarcity of water and the need to fill an imagined silence with the sounds of civilisation. From the moment the First Fleeters stepped ashore, water determined progress. The Tank Stream that flowed through what is now the Sydney CBD provided fresh water until settlers and their livestock fouled it. Then water from a nearby swamp was piped into the growing settlement. When it ran dry sights were set further afield.” (from the Text Publishing website) Michael Cathcart is a well-known writer, broadcaster and theatre director. He abridged Manning Clark’s six-volume A History of Australia (Melbourne University Press, 1993), and currently lectures in Australian Studies at the University of Melbourne. Entry: $5/ $2. Switch off Hazelwood! Switch off coal!
Switch on Renewables! This will be a day of fun, creative and inspiring direct community action at Hazelwood coal power station. This march and protest at the front gates of the Hazelwood Power Station, is organised by community members who care about climate change - and are willing to take peaceful community action
Take action for renewable energy & clean energy jobs! Hazelwood is one of the dirtiest coal stations in the industrialised world, spewing an average of 17 million tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year. It was scheduled to be shut down this year but it was given a reprieve by the ALP state government in 2005 allowing it to continue operating until 2031. We need to remove that lifeline and instead support renewable energy, extending the lifeline to our planet.

In this lecture Professor Robert Manne, one of Australia’s foremost public intellectuals, will try to find answers to some urgent questions. Have we reached the end of the era of neo-liberalism, the faith in the free market that was central to Australian politics for the last two decades? Can the embrace of the free market be held responsible for our present problems? What sort of alternative visions are emerging today and what issues do these new political ideas have to address? Percy Baxter Lecture Theatre (D2.193), Geelong Waterfront Campus Deakin University Gheringhap Street, Geelong, Victoria This event is hosted by the Alfred Deakin Research Institute as part of the New Politics Seminar: New Politics – New Visions for Australia - New intellectual and moral frameworks for progressive politics. | |||||
