Direct Action presents: Revolution & counter Revolution in Central America Nicaragua, El Salvador and Honduras Lessons and experiences for socialism in the 21st Century On 19 July 1979, Nicaragua's Sandinistas 9FSLN) led a seccessful people's insurrection, overthrowing the Somoza dictatorship and beginning a period of a workers and farmers government, where socialism was put on the agenda but eventually defeated. Thirty years later the Sandinista's are back in power and the people of El Salvador have elected a government supported by the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN). The FMLN had previousely led a guerilla movement and like the Sandinista's, pursued an insurrectional road to revolution. On June 28 of this year the left leaning government of Manuel Zalaya in Honduras was ousted by a right wing military coup. These developments are an attempt by the local bourgeoise and international capital to reverse the left turn that is taken place throught the latin American continent. This forum will look at the challenges of building a socialism of the 21st Century in the Americas. It will also explore the historical lessons of the revolutions that have occured in the region. Guest Speakers: Representative of the FMLN in Melbourne Roberto Jorquera: Revolutionary Socialist Party evening will include Video footage of the developments in Honduras 6.30pm, Thurs, 30 July Direct Action Centre Victorian Trades Hall cnr Lygon & Victoria St, Carlton Tel 0439 454 375 or 0403 943 529 Email. entry by donation * The Direct Action Centre is located via the Victoria St Entrance of the Victorian Trades Hall, next to the New International Bookshop | ||

In this session we will hear about the different social movements in Colombia, from the indigenous struggle for self determination, the Afro-Colombian opposition to forced displacement and against free-trade agreements, the people´s movement for peace with social justice. With the participation of Sergio Mariscal, Colombian Academic & member of Peace & Justice for Colombia. Plus footage & video.
After the presentation, the Free Liliany Campaign (Melbourne) invites you to share a “Coffee for Freedom”, to hear some updates about Liliany´s case and to send our solidarity to Liliany, her family and other political prisoners suffering injustice. On August 7th, 2008, the Union leader, academic & film-maker Liliany Obando, was arrested by Colombian government forces. She was detained on charges of “rebellion” against the state, a catch-all charge that is regularly used to imprison those who speak out against the government & is used to delegitimise the work of social activists. Her trial stated at the beginning of July and the charges remain unsubstantiated. Drink hot organic coffee. All donations will go to the “Freedom Fund” in support of Colombian political prisoners.
