SUMMARY:Protest The Intervention - Jenny Macklin's Office
DESCRIPTION:
<p style=\\"margin-bottom\: 0cm\\">
This Wednesday 8th July Aboriginal
rights activists from around the country are holding a protest
outside the office of Indigenous Affairs Minister\, Jenny Macklin at
149 Burgundy St Heidelberg.

The protest was jointly called by the
Intervention Rollback Action Group from Alice Springs\, Stop the
Intervention from Sydney and the Melbourne Anti-Intervention
Collective.

The protest will be attended by a number of
Aboriginal leaders from Alice Springs and surrounding communities who
have been directly affected by the Northern Territory intervention\,
and who will be affected by Jenny Macklin’s planned take over of
the Alice Springs town camps and the Northern Territory Government’s
policy of moving Aboriginal people from homelands to ‘hub’
communities.

Opponents of the Governments expansion of the
Northern Territory intervention have labeled it racist and
assimilationist\, arguing that the real aims of the intervention are
to move Aboriginal people off their traditional land and to destroy
Aboriginal culture.

“The recent report from the Productivity
Commission shows the failure of the Rudd Government’s approach of
imposing policy upon Aboriginal communities. The Rudd Government’s
‘Closing the Gap’ policy and expansion of the Northern Territory
intervention have proved to be devastating for Aboriginal people.

We
demand that the Government reinstate the Racial Discrimination Act\,
repeal the racist policies of the intervention\, and act on their own
surveys that show that the best outcomes are achieved when Aboriginal
people have control of their own affairs\,” said Joe Lorback from
the Melbourne Anti-Intervention Collective.

On Wednesday
protesters will be highlighting the failure of the Labour Government
to re-instate the Racial Discrimination Act\, the racism of
quarantined welfare payments\, Jenny Macklin’s decision to take over
the Alice Springs town camps\, the Northern Territory Governments
policy of forcing Aboriginal people off homelands\, and the
‘blackmailing’ of Aboriginal communities to trade their land for
housing and basic services.

Aboriginal community leaders have
spoken out against the injustice of the &quot\;BasicCard&quot\; that
gives the Government the power to decide where those on quarantined
welfare must do their shopping and what they can buy. Accessing
welfare entitlements has turned into a new battle that is leading
many of them to go hungry and forcing them to leave their land and
move into larger towns where housing\, health and education problems
are greater.

“The Aboriginal people are being forced to line
up in separately to the rest of the population to negotiate the
&quot\;BasicCard&quot\; in Centrelink and in shops. This clearly shows
that the government intentions are the total assimilation of these
Aboriginal communities\,” said Marisol S. from the Melbourne
Anti-Intervention Collective.

Aboriginal leader Barbara Shaw
who is traveling to Melbourne from her home in Mt Nancy town camp
near Alice Springs has argued that things have gotten worse since the
introduction of income quarantining. “Centrelink is always
mismanaging funds and people are losing money... We need control of
our own money. This legislation is racist and must be repealed\,”
said Ms Shaw.

Protesters are meeting at 12 midday out the
front of Jenny Macklin’s Burgundy St office. They have said they
are determined to make their opposition to the expansion of the
intervention and take over of the Alice Springs town camps known to
the Minister and the wider community.

On 19 September 2007\, Israel’s “Security Cabinet” declared the Gaza Strip a “hostile entity”. Since that time\, Israel in the name of “security” has imposed an illegal and punitive siege against the 1.5 million civilians living in Gaza\, preventing almost entirely the movement of goods and people into and out of Gaza. Israel’s illegal siege\, which is a form of collective punishment\, is a war crime under international law.

According to Oxfam\, more than 80% of Gaza’s 1.5 million residents are currently dependent on international food aid as a result of the siege. In addition\, according to a report in October 2008 by the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights currently 45% of working age adults in the Gaza Strip are officially unemployed.

Since Israel’s all-out bombing of the Gaza Strip in December - January\, the situation in Gaza has gotten worse and the siege has tightened. During Israel’s assault on Gaza\, more than 1400 Gazans were killed\, two-thirds of whom were civilians. According to the United Nations\, more than 42\,400 houses were destroyed\, leaving more than 250\,000 people homeless. Also destroyed were 14 mosques and 10 schools\, while a further 240 schools were damaged. Currently\, due to Israel’s siege\, no widespread reconstruction can take place.

On July 9 2004\, the International Court of Justice ruled that Israel’s building of the apartheid wall is illegal. The following year on July 9\, 2005\, more than 100 Palestinian civil society organisations launched the international call for a boycott\, divestment and sanctions campaign against Israel until it complied with its obligations under international law.

To mark the anniversary of these two very important events\, we call on all supporters of human rights to join us and to speak out against Israel’s ongoing human rights abuses against the Palestinian people\, to say no to Israel's occupation and apartheid policies and to demand justice for the Palestinian people struggling against siege\, occupation and war.

Revolution &amp\; counter Revolution in Central America

Nicaragua\, El Salvador and Honduras
Lessons and experiences for socialism in the 21st Century

On 19 July 1979\, Nicaragua's Sandinistas 9FSLN) led a seccessful people's insurrection\, overthrowing the Somoza dictatorship and beginning a period of a workers and farmers government\, where socialism was put on the agenda but eventually defeated.

Thirty years later the Sandinista's are back in power and the people of El Salvador have elected a government supported by the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN). The FMLN had previousely led a guerilla movement and like the Sandinista's\, pursued an insurrectional road to revolution.

On June 28 of this year the left leaning government of Manuel Zalaya in Honduras was ousted by a right wing military coup. These developments are an attempt by the local bourgeoise and international capital to reverse the left turn that is taken place throught the latin American continent.

This forum will look at the challenges of building a socialism of the 21st Century in the Americas. It will also explore the historical lessons of the revolutions that have occured in the region.
