Abya Yala (American Continent)

Continental Confederation of the Eagle and the Condor
STATEMENT OF SOLIDARITY And Call to Justice

In Support of the Indigenous Peoples of the Amazon- Peru
From Abya Yala North

Confederation of the Eagle to Confederation of the Boa
June 8, 2009

Invoking our collective ancestral obligations as members of the Continental Confederation of the Eagle and the Condor, in concert with calls to action by the Continental Coordinating Body of Indigenous Nations, Pueblos and Organizations of Abya Yala, we as Indigenous Peoples of Abya Yala North, speaking as Original Nations of the Continent raise our voice in solidarity and denunciation to address the genocide of our relatives of the Amazon Territories of the Confederation of the Boa in Peru.

We echo the call for an International Tribunal of Justice to address the crimes of genocide, war crimes, and terracide that are now perpetrated by the administration of Peruvian President Alan Garcia Perez.  We specifically denounce the Decree Laws of executive order, and the military and police invasion of the territories of the Indigenous Peoples of the Peruvian Amazon which has resulted in the loss of scores of Human Life over the past week.

We demand accountability from the US Government, President Barack Obama and the US society as a whole for the issue of complicity with the ongoing genocide occurring throughout the Amazon Basin of Abya Yala South, with priority and particular focus on the situation in the Peruvian Amazon and the persecution of our indigenous organizations and leadership such as the AIDESEP, (Interethnic Association for Development of the Peruvian Amazon) president Alberto Pizango Chota.

We demand an immediate moratorium on all trade agreements hemispherically between the US and the government states of the OAS, until a comprehensive review and report on these compacts be undertaken by the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Peoples, in evaluation of the violation of the Right of Self Determination of Indigenous Peoples affirmed by the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and systematic violation of the principle of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent referenced by the International Labor Organization (ILO) Convention 169.  Any such trade agreements among the states that do not integrate the recognition, respect and protection for the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as referenced by the UN Declaration on the rights of Indigenous Peoples is hereby proclaimed illegitimate in our hemisphere of Abya Yala.

We demand immediate congressional hearings on the US-Peru Free Trade Agreement as an instrument of criminal collusion with the genocide perpetrated against the Indigenous Peoples of the Amazon in Peru.

We affirm the call by the delegations of Abya Yala North from Mexico and Canada that have demanded the cancellation of the US-Peru Free Trade Agreement, and apply the same criteria of denunciation to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) between Canada-US-Mexico as well.

The paradigm of social economic development driven by capitalist expropriation and exploitation of Indigenous lands and labor has come to an end.  It has died, with the blood of the jungle of the Peruvian Amazon the death certificate has been delivered to the world.  A new, yet ancient, global ecological-economic framework is emerging at great cost, but also with great promise to effectively address the global climate crisis.  The recognition of the rights of Indigenous Peoples is the first step.

Our call is the challenge of change invoked by the new administration in Washington, DC that is historic in itself for not being defined by the dehumanizing memes of caste and the historical trajectory of Manifest Destiny of the European American colonization of North America.

Now is the time for the realization of Integrity, integrating justice and dignity along with all of our fellow "Americans" of this continent Abya Yala in a new world hemispheric policy of Self Determination and Reciprocity with Respect for the Rights of the Nations of the Indigenous Peoples at a continental level, transcribed in the principles of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples which was adopted by the UN General Assembly on September 13th, 2007.

The time has come to not only change but TRANSFORM our collective continental society of the Americas, breaking the chains of centuries of European-American racism and colonization, expropriation and exploitation by finally and for the first time arriving and discovering the ancient hearth of our global humanity here in the New World of Abya Yala: a world under assault since the beginnings of World War One: October the 12th, 1492.

This war, the war against the Nations of Indigenous Peoples of Abya Yala, must also be brought to an end.   In pursuit of peace, and in solidarity with our relatives of the Indigenous Peoples of the Amazon of Peru, we deliver this message of conscience and call to justice.

Weaving Dark into Light Fundraiser: solar panels for East Timor’s poorest

The Alternative Technology Association (ATA) is helping East Timor’s poorest generate their own income, by installing solar power that will generate light.

ATA will be raising funds for the first stage of the East Timor Women’s Association’s Gimme Shelter project, which will bring solar powered lighting to women’s weaving collectives, in the remote villages of Fuat and Kainleu.

Installing planet-friendly lighting ensures these women can support their communities through the sale of their traditional cloth to local and international markets, whilst preserving their cultural practices and the environment.

The money raised will also help fund a solar-powered mobile theatre for community education, and lighting for households in rural areas.

ATA Project Manager, Anton Vikstrom, the ATA International Project Group and International Volunteers will be giving a presentation on their work in East Timor and recruiting volunteers for future projects.

Tuesday (16th June), 6:30pm. Level 2/39 Little Collins Street, Melbourne.Donation at the door $10.

Indonesia: money politics vs people's democracy

ZELY ARIANE, the national spokesperson of Political Committee of the Poor, a revolutionary socialist group that organises workers, women, farmers, urban poor and students, represents a new generation of young radicals who reject Indonesia's fake “democracy” and pro-capitalist governments.

Zely, who is visiting Australia this month from Jakata, will speak on what the Indonesian April parliamentary and July presidential elections reveal about her country's "march to democracy". She will also discuss the challenges facing Indonesia's fractured left in fighting for a "people's democracy" -- one that can meet the needs of its workers and peasants.

Zely is also active in the Jakarta based trade union SOLIDARITY ALLIANCE FOR LABOUR STRUGGLE. She is a leader of the Women's Liberation group Perempuan Mahardika and is active in both grass roots level organising and forging local and national alliances to create a popular alternative to the rotten politics of Indonesia's capitalist rulers.

On Saturday 20th June supporters of Aboriginal rights in Melbourne will be marking the two-year anniversary of the Northern Territory intervention with a solidarity rally in the CBD, followed by a public meeting at Trades Hall.

The events will feature live music and a range of speakers,
including a woman from the Alice Springs town camps.

“We have organized the rally in order to show our disgust and opposition to the Rudd Government’s expansion of Howard’s racist intervention policy, and to stand in solidarity with the Indigenous people of this country. We will also be holding a public meeting as an opportunity for people to learn more about the effects of the NT intervention and the direction the Rudd Government is taking it, the meeting will also involve workshops and planning for the campaign. The governments attempt to take Aboriginal land, close homelands, and wind-back hard-won Aboriginal self-determination will not be ignored here in Melbourne” said Joe Lorback from the Melbourne Anti-Intervention Collective.

“The Rudd Government’s approach to Indigenous people is dominated by hypocrisy and blackmail! With one hand they sign the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous people, and with the other they refuse to re-instate the Racial Discrimination Act, instead expanding the policies of the intervention and forcing Indigenous people to give up their land in return for desperately needed housing and services,” said Marisol Salinas from the Melbourne Anti-Intervention Collective

Nathan Lovett-Murray, founder of Payback Records, has organized local
Indigenous hip hop artists
to perform at the rally. “Little G, Mr Morgz,
Alter Egoz, and Tjimba and the Yung Warriors will be at the rally raising
their voices against the discriminatory policies of the government, and in
support of Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory having control over
their lives,” said Nathan.

The Solidarity Rally will take place on Saturday 20th June at 12pm in the State Library, cnr Swanston and La Trobe streets. The public meeting also on Saturday will be at 3pm at Trades Hall Meeting Room 1.

This Wednesday 8th July Aboriginal rights activists from around the country are holding a protest outside the office of Indigenous Affairs Minister, Jenny Macklin at 149 Burgundy St Heidelberg.

The protest was jointly called by the Intervention Rollback Action Group from Alice Springs, Stop the Intervention from Sydney and the Melbourne Anti-Intervention Collective.

The protest will be attended by a number of Aboriginal leaders from Alice Springs and surrounding communities who have been directly affected by the Northern Territory intervention, and who will be affected by Jenny Macklin’s planned take over of the Alice Springs town camps and the Northern Territory Government’s policy of moving Aboriginal people from homelands to ‘hub’ communities.

Opponents of the Governments expansion of the Northern Territory intervention have labeled it racist and assimilationist, arguing that the real aims of the intervention are to move Aboriginal people off their traditional land and to destroy Aboriginal culture.

“The recent report from the Productivity Commission shows the failure of the Rudd Government’s approach of imposing policy upon Aboriginal communities. The Rudd Government’s ‘Closing the Gap’ policy and expansion of the Northern Territory intervention have proved to be devastating for Aboriginal people.

We demand that the Government reinstate the Racial Discrimination Act, repeal the racist policies of the intervention, and act on their own surveys that show that the best outcomes are achieved when Aboriginal people have control of their own affairs,” said Joe Lorback from the Melbourne Anti-Intervention Collective.

On Wednesday protesters will be highlighting the failure of the Labour Government to re-instate the Racial Discrimination Act, the racism of quarantined welfare payments, Jenny Macklin’s decision to take over the Alice Springs town camps, the Northern Territory Governments policy of forcing Aboriginal people off homelands, and the ‘blackmailing’ of Aboriginal communities to trade their land for housing and basic services.

Aboriginal community leaders have spoken out against the injustice of the "BasicCard" that gives the Government the power to decide where those on quarantined welfare must do their shopping and what they can buy. Accessing welfare entitlements has turned into a new battle that is leading many of them to go hungry and forcing them to leave their land and move into larger towns where housing, health and education problems are greater.

“The Aboriginal people are being forced to line up in separately to the rest of the population to negotiate the "BasicCard" in Centrelink and in shops. This clearly shows that the government intentions are the total assimilation of these Aboriginal communities,” said Marisol S. from the Melbourne Anti-Intervention Collective.

Aboriginal leader Barbara Shaw who is traveling to Melbourne from her home in Mt Nancy town camp near Alice Springs has argued that things have gotten worse since the introduction of income quarantining. “Centrelink is always mismanaging funds and people are losing money... We need control of our own money. This legislation is racist and must be repealed,” said Ms Shaw.

Protesters are meeting at 12 midday out the front of Jenny Macklin’s Burgundy St office. They have said they are determined to make their opposition to the expansion of the intervention and take over of the Alice Springs town camps known to the Minister and the wider community.

On 19 September 2007, Israel’s “Security Cabinet” declared the Gaza Strip a “hostile entity”.  Since that time, Israel in the name of “security” has imposed an illegal and punitive siege against the 1.5 million civilians living in Gaza, preventing almost entirely the movement of goods and people into and out of Gaza.  Israel’s illegal siege, which is a form of collective punishment, is a war crime under international law.

According to Oxfam, more than 80% of Gaza’s 1.5 million residents are currently dependent on international food aid as a result of the siege.  In addition, according to a report in October 2008 by the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights currently 45% of working age adults in the Gaza Strip are officially unemployed.

Since Israel’s all-out bombing of the Gaza Strip in December - January, the situation in Gaza has gotten worse and the siege has tightened.  During Israel’s assault on Gaza, more than 1400 Gazans were killed, two-thirds of whom were civilians.  According to the United Nations, more than 42,400 houses were destroyed, leaving more than 250,000 people homeless.   Also destroyed were 14 mosques and 10 schools, while a further 240 schools were damaged.  Currently, due to Israel’s siege, no widespread reconstruction can take place.

On July 9 2004, the International Court of Justice ruled that Israel’s building of the apartheid wall is illegal.  The following year on July 9, 2005, more than 100 Palestinian civil society organisations launched the international call for a boycott, divestment and sanctions campaign against Israel until it complied with its obligations under international law.

To mark the anniversary of these two very important events, we call on all supporters of human rights to join us and to speak out against Israel’s ongoing human rights abuses against the Palestinian people, to say no to Israel's occupation and apartheid policies and to demand justice for the Palestinian people struggling against siege, occupation and war.

End the siege of Gaza!

End the Israeli occupation of Palestine!
