Hip Hop to Heal the Land
-Bushfire Benefit-

Melbourne’s finest hip hop acts are gathering for a one off gig to raise money for the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal, ‘Healing the Land’, at the North Melbourne Meat Market on Friday 3 April.  Open to all ages to attend, Heal the Land is part of National Youth Week, which runs from 28 March to 5 April.

‘Healing the Land’  is a rare opportunity to hear the best underground and emerging hip hop artists as they volunteer their talents to perform at one event.  You will be treated to fresh sounds, a great crowd and help raise money to assist people affected by the February fires.

Headlining ‘Healing the Land’ is a wealth of lyrical talent including the dynamic duo Mata n Must bringing their inimitable flavour; Yung Warriors and Johnny Mac & Mariki Hood inspire and have a strong following driven by support from Essendon footballer Nathan Lovett-Murray’s record label, Payback Records.  The label provides a valuable voice for Aboriginal hip hop artists and builds a sense of community.   Additional talent performing on the night includes Elf Transporter, Litigate MC, Class A with DJ Bogues, Julez, Ultra Violet, Indascene and Cam.  Each has a story to tell and each in an incomparable style that is inspired by the hip hop culture.  Why would you be anywhere else?

Tickets cost only $10 per person and all proceeds go to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal.  ‘Healing the Land’ is open to all ages and is a drug and alcohol free event.  The City of Melbourne and the Victorian Government proudly support the event organiser, Living Music Freeza.  It consists predominantly of young people who volunteer their time and skills to gain invaluable work and life experiences.

Capitalism at a crossroads: Opening Night of Marxism 2009
6:30pm Thursday April 9th, Melbourne University Student Union Building

The impact of the global financial crisis across the world has seen the collapse of countless banks and businesses, with untold millions of people left without jobs, homes or with reduced working conditions. Over 20 million workers in China, on returning to the cities after celebrating Chinese New Year, found they had no jobs to come back to. Under the shadow of this crisis, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan continue to rage, with American President Barack Obama committing an additional 15,000 more troops to the conflict in Afghanistan.

It is clear that the world is entering a new era, but the path is not at all pre-determined. There has been growing resistance to governments' responses to the economic crisis as well as the wars that devastate people's lives.

This Easter eve, 6:30pm Thursday 9th April, is the opening night of Marxism 2009, which will gather together hundreds of activists, socialists and others from across Australia and the world, to discuss how best to advance to a fairer, more humane society.

This event features keynote speakers on the topic of Challenging Capitalism and War. American socialist and journalist Joe Allen is author of Vietnam: the (Last) War the U.S. Lost and a frequent contributor to the International Socialist Review. Mamdouh Habashi is an Egyptian activist and theorist, involved in the Cairo Conferences and a participant of 2008 Egyptian textile workers' strikes. Sandra Bloodworth, Australian socialist, is a leading member of Socialist Alternative and author of a number of recently published books on the current economic crisis and the Russian Revolution.

The opening night will launch what is bound to be an inspiring and stimulating weekend full of debate and discussion on theory, history and culture. Ensure you are there for the premier opening event of Marxism 2009

ImageJoin 3CR folks at the 3CR fundraising film screening of Melbourne animation masterpiece Mary and Max on Thursday 16 April 6.45pm at the Kino Cinema.

Director Adam Eliot will introduce the film.

Adam Eliot (Harvie Crumpet) and his film crew have created a funny and bittersweet tale of oddballness, friendship and humanity (sound familiar?!) with their first feature length adventure.

Book your ticket now for only $20 full and $16 concession by paying online with your credit card or paypal account (see right)  or call the station during business hours on 9419 8377.

Synopsis: As Mary and Max chronicles Mary’s trip from adolescence to adulthood, and Max’s passage from middle to old age, it explores a bond that survives much more than the average friendship’s ups-and-downs. Mary and Max is both hilarious and poignant as it takes us on a journey that explores friendship, autism, taxidermy, psychiatry, alcoholism, where babies come from. Read a review.

The Kino Cinema is at 45 Collins st. It is in the CBD and is easy to get to on your bike or public transport. The number 109 tram goes right passed and Parliament train station is a block away. If you are car bound, Kino Cinema goers can park at the Collins Place carpark on Flinders Lanefree for 2 hours and then $2hr after that.

The City of Yarra was approached by community members from Gippsland to help organise an arts fundraiser to raise money for bushfire relief and it has been our privilege to work with an absolutely committed group of individuals to put together an auction at the Fitzroy Town Hall for the 21 May.

I can tell you wonderful stories about how many arms Dawn Stubbs has twisted to get everyone on board, including securing the services of the auction house Leonard Joel; the local printer James Yeats Printing who is printing the catalogue for free; Annette Frew who has convinced Gippsland food and wine producers to donate their goods (Capra Goats Cheese, Jindi Cheese, Maffra Cheese and Limbicks Winery); to the Cultural Catering cooks in Yarra’s public housing estates have committed to cooking gourmet foods that will be offered as part of entry to the auction; of the many kilometres Chris Stubbs has driven to collect all the donated artworks across Gippsland; about Carmel Nunan our freelance publicist who is donating her time; Easytix for the fabulous ticketing service; and to the ever growing list of artists who have donated their works for the auction.

2009 Melbourne Social Forum flierThe MSF aims to bring progressive thinkers together so that they can discuss, share and act on ideas for sustainable social and ecological justice.

Our goal is to help create a socially just and ecologically sustainable world by promoting collaboration between community groups, activists, and the wider community.

The event is an ideal opportunity for you to connect, inter link and develop these collaborations with organisations and individuals from Victoria and beyond.

The theme for this year is ‘In the Hot House - Positive Responses to Climate Change’. Under this umbrella, other vital contemporary themes (like human rights, sustainability, social and environmental justice) will also be discussed. In addition to discussion – based events and workshops, the MSF also features stalls, live music and artistic performances, films screenings, art displays, excellent food, great coffee and the chance to have the odd glass of wine should you be so inclined.

The launch will be followed by a two-day weekend festival at Ceres Environmental Park.

Stop Sri Lanka's Genocide of the Tamil People: Young Tamils Speak

Hear from the Tamil community about this important freedom struggle. Come and show solidarity by learning about and uncovering the hidden war. Bring your ideas about what we can do to help bring it to an end.

Since January 2009, more than 2,000 Tamils have been killed and 7,000 wounded by Sri Lankan troops. More than 200,000 are trapped inside a barren and shadeless 12-kilometre strip of land, without drinking water. Food and medicines are not allowed in. Forced hysterectomies and abortions of Tamil women make the genocidal aim of the Sri Lankan government’s offensive unmistakable. This is another Gaza, but concealed from world view.

For the past half century, the Sri Lankan state has persecuted the Tamil people and, over the past 25 years, has carried out a military campaign to drive them from their homeland, Tamil Eelam, in the country’s north and east. Because of the area’s strategic importance, global and regional powers — including the United States, Israel, Pakistan and India — have backed this brutal offensive. In an effort to demonise and isolate the Tamils’ just resistance, the U.S. and European Union listed the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) as a terrorist organisation.

11.30am - 1 pm

FRIDAY, 24 APRIL

In Dec-Jan, more than 1400 Palestinians, 3/4 of them civilians, were killed when Israel conducted its 22 day war  against 1.5 million Palestinians civilians living in the Gaza Strip. Israel’s war came in the Gaza Strip came on the back of Israel’s illegal and brutal two year siege of Gaza which has denied the people of Gaza adequate food, fuel, medicine and electricity.  In addition, Israel continues, in contravention, of international law to carry out  an illegal 40 year military occupation of Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, engaging in Apartheid policies, while continuing to dispossess for more than 60 years the Palestinian people from their homeland.

The Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce (AICC) membership includes more than 1000 leading Australian companies across a broad range of industry sectors.  It seeks to vigorously promote bilateral trade between Australia and Israel.  On April 24, Australian Prime Minster, Kevin Rudd will be speaking at the AICC’s  business luncheon.

newmatilda.com presents a national series of public forums about the internet regulation debate in Australia.

The Federal Government's proposal to block internet sites with a mandatory filter has drawn overwhelming opposition from voices across politics and civil society. So what are the real questions for policy-makers?

These forums explore the ethical, social and political questions raised by government regulation of the internet. With the growing intersection between technology, politics and media, how do existing and proposed classification regimes measure up? Is filtering inevitable? Or are there better ways to regulate the world wide web?

Senator Scott Ludlam, the Australian Greens
Michael Flood, Sociologist
Colin Jacobs, Electronic Frontiers Australia

Workers are being sacked, and the bosses walk away with millions. The government tries to stop angry workers from fighting back.

Workers should not be forced to pay for the global capitalist crisis.

1st of May Day Global Day of Action - Rally

Friday 1 May 09

5:30 state library

Swanston street melbourne

To download full leaflet go to the website.

Our work produces the capitalists‘ profits. But we work to provide for ourselves and our families. We want a living wage and a healthy workplace. Instead all around the world, many of us become sick or die because of our work.

Workers in all countries are our allies. Our common enemies are the governments  and capitalists who want us to compete against other workers for jobs. Together we can win.

Our strength is a united working class. We must oppose and defeat capitalism.

No sackings. No wage cuts. No unsafe work. No workplace closures. Guaranteed pensions and social security. No disconnections. No evictions. No repossessions.

Our power is international industrial action and solidarity.

Support workers’ struggle. Fight to win.

Workers change the world.
