Capitalism at a crossroads: Opening Night of Marxism 2009
6:30pm Thursday April 9th, Melbourne University Student Union Building
The impact of the global financial crisis across the world has seen the
collapse of countless banks and businesses, with untold millions of people left
without jobs, homes or with reduced working conditions. Over 20 million workers
in China, on
returning to the cities after celebrating Chinese New Year, found they had no
jobs to come back to. Under the shadow of this crisis, the wars in Iraq
and Afghanistan
continue to rage, with American President Barack Obama committing an additional
15,000 more troops to the conflict in Afghanistan.
It is clear that the world is entering a new era, but the path is not at all
pre-determined. There has been growing resistance to governments' responses to
the economic crisis as well as the wars that devastate people's lives.
This Easter eve, 6:30pm Thursday 9th April,
is the opening night of Marxism 2009, which will gather together
hundreds of activists, socialists and others from across Australia and the
world, to discuss how best to advance to a fairer, more humane society.
This event features keynote speakers on the topic of Challenging Capitalism and
War. American socialist and journalist Joe Allen
is author of Vietnam: the (Last) War the U.S. Lost and a frequent contributor to the International Socialist Review. Mamdouh
Habashi is an Egyptian activist and theorist, involved in the
Cairo Conferences and a participant of 2008 Egyptian textile workers' strikes. Sandra
Bloodworth, Australian socialist, is a leading member of Socialist
Alternative and author of a number of recently published
books on the current economic crisis and the Russian Revolution.
The opening night will launch what is bound to be an inspiring and stimulating
weekend full of debate and discussion on theory, history and culture. Ensure
you are there for the premier opening event of Marxism 2009

Stop Sri Lanka's Genocide of the Tamil People: Young Tamils Speak
Hear from the Tamil community about this important freedom
struggle. Come and show solidarity by learning about and uncovering the
hidden war. Bring your ideas about what we can do to help bring it to
an end.
Since January 2009, more than 2,000 Tamils have been killed and 7,000 wounded by Sri Lankan troops. More than 200,000 are trapped inside a barren and shadeless 12-kilometre strip of land, without drinking water. Food and medicines are not allowed in. Forced hysterectomies and abortions of Tamil women make the genocidal aim of the Sri Lankan government’s offensive unmistakable. This is another Gaza, but concealed from world view.
For the past half century, the Sri Lankan state has persecuted the Tamil people and, over the past 25 years, has carried out a military campaign to drive them from their homeland, Tamil Eelam, in the country’s north and east. Because of the area’s strategic importance, global and regional powers — including the United States, Israel, Pakistan and India — have backed this brutal offensive. In an effort to demonise and isolate the Tamils’ just resistance, the U.S. and European Union listed the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) as a terrorist organisation.

Workers are being sacked, and the bosses walk away with millions. The government tries to stop angry workers from fighting back.
Workers should not be forced to pay for the global capitalist crisis.

To download full leaflet go to the website. Our work produces the capitalists‘ profits. But we work to provide for ourselves and our families. We want a living wage and a healthy workplace. Instead all around the world, many of us become sick or die because of our work.
Workers in all countries are our allies. Our common enemies are the governments and capitalists who want us to compete against other workers for jobs. Together we can win.
Our strength is a united working class. We must oppose and defeat capitalism.
No sackings. No wage cuts. No unsafe work. No workplace closures. Guaranteed pensions and social security. No disconnections. No evictions. No repossessions.
Our power is international industrial action and solidarity.
Support workers’ struggle. Fight to win.
Workers change the world.
