Sustainable Living Foundation, Friends of the Earth, and Greenleap Institute present...
/the 2009 sustainability convergence/

'breakthrough: from recession to sustainability'

As we face a looming financial crisis, what are the threats and opportunities to social and environmental movements?

How do we break the 'business as usual' model? How do we 'bail out' the planet? This convergence seeks to bring together people from across Melbourne to start to develop a pathway through the recession to a sustainable economy. What would this look like and how we would we get there? What about livelihood and good work, what about community resilience? What about our place in the world? How do we respond effectively to the looming crisis of climate change? And what does this mean for the social and environmental movements in the short term?

This one day forum will look at the opportunities and threats connected to the economic downturn – political, financial, cultural. We will look at hope and fear (and how we can speak in frames not of opposition but of hope and determination), sketch out pathways to a better future, and how we could get to a safe climate economy in 10 years.

We will also consider how we could make Melbourne a sustainable city – one that is compact, people friendly, based on public transport, renewable energy, biodiversity and food production

There will be a session for workshops – you are welcome to send proposals in before the conference or nominate speakers for the plenary sessions

'A CONCERT TO SAVE WATER AND OURSELVES'

On Sunday February 15, 2009 the East Brunswick Club will play host to the H20 Water Awareness Concert. A satellite event of the 2009 Sustainable Living Festival, the concert is aimed at raising Melburnians’ awareness of water conservation.

With Melbourne on level 3a water restrictions and every chance of going to level 4 by the end of summer, organisers feel that an ignorance still exists in Melbourne of the extent of the problem and also as to what the population can do at home to help the situation.

The evening will not only feature some great acoustic music from a number of up and coming Melbourne artists but will also feature speakers from Environment Victoria and The Department of Sustainability and Environment. DSE will also provide water saving packs for everyone attending.

Artists featured will include the talented Krista Polvere (fresh from her national tour with Steve Earle), Murray Goodchild and the up and coming Yellow Stallions.

All proceeds from the concert will go toward Environment Victoria’s Healthy Rivers Program and the CERES Sustainable Village in Brunswick. Doors open at 7:30pm with tickets only $15.00.

What is the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Campaign?

The BDS campaign call was issued in 2005 by more than 170 Palestinian organisations, including political parties, unions, associations, coalitions and other civil organisations.  Inspired by the struggle of South Africans against apartheid, the BDS campaign is conducted in the frame work of international solidarity and resistance to injustice and oppression.  The campaign calls upon international civil society organisations and people of conscience all over the world to impose broad boycotts and implement divestment initiatives against Israel similar to those applied to South Africa in the apartheid era, while also calling for pressure to be place on governments to impose embargoes and sanctions against Israel until it meets its obligations to recognised the Palestinian people's inalienable right to self determine and it fully complies with international law.

Imagining India

Melboure Cinematheque - Wednesday 25 February 2009 7.00pm @ ACMI Cinemas

7:00pm     THE RIVER Jean Renoir (1951) 99 mins

Superbly observed, immensely moving, lyrical adaptation by director Renoir & author Rumer Godden of her novel concerning an episode in the life of a small British community living on the banks of the Ganges as seen through the eyes of an awkward 14-year-old girl. Both fantastical & realist, an exploration of colonialism & a humanist documentation of local custom, tradition & daily life, this is one of the great colour films. Exquisitely shot by Claude Renoir who makes India blaze with vivid & contrasting colours. Restored 35mm print courtesy of the BFI.

8:50pm     BLACK NARCISSUS Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger (1947) 100 mins PG

Rumer Godden's novel of an order of nuns trying to establish a remote Himalayan mission is transformed by Powell & Pressburger's fevered imagination into a technicolor masterpiece of heightened operatic intensity, repressed sexuality & cinematic audaciousness. Almost totally shot in the studio, this is one of cinema's great synthetic achievements, featuring atmospheric production design by Alfred Junge & wonderfully expressive cinematography by Jack Cardiff. With Deborah Kerr, David Farrar, Sabu & the indelible Kathleen Byron. Restored 35mm print courtesy of the BFI. Preceded by Calcutta Paul Cox (1970) 22 mins. Print courtesy of the NFSA.

First feature season for 2009: MARCH 4–18 BETWEEN SHADOW & LIGHT: THE WORLD OF INGMAR BERGMAN

Around 120 women from across the western region will gather at the Key to the Future: Unlocking 21 Years of Women's Stories forum to celebrate International Women’s Day and Women’s Health West’s 21st birthday.

This is the eighth International Women’s Day celebration for Women’s Health West and we invite past and present staff, board members and partner agencies to gather for lunch, laughter and stories of women’s health, safety and wellbeing in the west.

“International Women’s Day is a major day of global celebration for the social and political achievements of women and a terrific time to celebrate the importance of working together to achieve change for women,” says Women’s Health West Chief Executive Officer, Dr Robyn Gregory.

Key to the future: unlocking 21 years of women’s stories features panellists including Kim Webster. Currently a Senior Program Advisor at VicHealth, Kim was a founding member of Women’s Health West. In 1987, Kim’s house was the headquarters for those writing the tender to establish this women’s health service.

“Statistically, women are more likely than men to be poor, unemployed, victims of domestic violence, to be single parents, to work in low status jobs, to have poor working conditions and to work the double shifts of paid work in the home and unpaid work within it,” said Maureen Dawson-Smith, Women’s Health Service Chairperson, at the 1988 opening.

“Despite overall improvements in the status of women over the last 21 years, these statistics, sadly, remain true today. But we haven’t lost any of our passion for working to improve the gender and structural inequalities that limit the lives of women in the west,” says Dr Gregory.

Participants will examine the history of women’s health in the west and plan for the future through a series of interactive workshops that involve sharing anecdotes and experiences using creative writing, collage and visualisation of the Women’s Health West ‘woman’.

Stories from the day will be collated with archival material, statistics and interviews to create a book outlining the history of Women’s Health West, to be launched in November 2009.

The free forum will be facilitated by the hilarious Nelly Thomas, who uses comedy to promote important social messages, especially those relating to health.

“Women’s Health West would love to hear from women who have worked at, or in partnership with, this organisation at any time during the last 21 years,” says Dr Gregory.

Key to the future: unlocking 21 years of women’s stories will run from 12-4pm on Thursday 5 March 2009 at the Moonee Valley Clocktower Centre, 750 Mt Alexander Road, Moonee Ponds. Interested women can call 9689 9588 or email to RSVP by Thursday 26 February 2009.

Australia has just witnessed its largest "natural" disaster. With over 200 deaths, many people understandably want answers.

While government and the media are keen to focus on arsonists, climate change, infrastructure and proper planning are sidelined.

According to studies from the CSIRO, Climate Institute and the Bushfire Council even a 'low global warming scenario' will see catastrophic bush fires happen every 5-7 years by 2020 and every 3-4 years by 2050. The 'high global warming scenario' is worse, with catastrophic fires expected every year.

Poor residential planning, lack of community infrastructure and insufficient funding for environmental maintenance and fire fighting equipment and services, have all contributed to the recent tragedy.

Why when ordinary people are so generous in helping those affected by the fires, has government been so ineffective?

This forum is an opportunity to discuss these issues and put a community perspective on the Victorian bushfire tragedy and discuss community and socialist solutions that could minisimes such tragedies.

MELBOURNE’S FILM COMMUNITY UNITES FOR BUSHFIRE FUNDRAISER

Melbourne’s screen culture leaders and cinephile community are coming together to support the Victorian Bushfire Appeal with a one-off fundraising screening of Matteo Garrone’s award-winning drama, Gomorrah.

Yet to be released in Australian cinemas, the sensation of Cannes (Grand Prix winner) and the 2008 Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF), Gomorrah will be screened at ACMI on Saturday 7 March with all proceeds going to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal.

The special fundraiser is being presented by the Melbourne Cinematheque, RMIT University and ACMI with the support of Madman Entertainment, Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS), Faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts Film and Television (VCA), Film Victoria, MIFF, Australian Film Institute (AFI).

The film will be introduced by Australian actor Nina Landis (City Homicide, The Hollowmen, MDA, Blackjack) with a package of short films from AFTRS to also screen.

Adults $25 Concession $20

************Gomorrah
Based on the best selling book by Roberto Saviano, who now lives under police protection due to the Mafia’s disapproval of his expose of their methods, Matteo Garrone’s enthralling account of the dirty underbelly of Neopolitan crime deconstructs the hoary old gangster myths from Coppolla’s Godfather trilogy and De Palma’s Scarface back to the films of James Cagney and Paul Muni.

Gomorrah is a welcome return to the great Italian political cinema, with its sense of the bleak, sun baked streets of Naples ripped by bullets and brutality, and its investigation through a mosaic narrative of how the Camorra has seeped into every aspect of Neopolitan life from waste disposal to high fashion.

Women against war

Sunday, March 8, 1pm

State Library, then march to Parliament House steps.

For human dignity, justice and an end to all violence against women, whether by governments or individuals. On International Women's Day, we call on the government to: Stop the war on women, end all forms of violence against women; Stop the war on Palestine; End the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan; End the killing of Tamils in Sri Lanka; End the Northern Territory Intervention.

International Women's Day has from its inception had a proud history of struggle against injustice and war. It is women and children who are worst affected by the brutality of armed forces. Rape is often used as a weapon of war. Housing is destroyed in bombings. Family members are killed in raids. The rights of women, so often trampled and repressed even in times of peace, only become more difficult to protect in a climate of fear and violence.

Wear purple, white and green. All groups are encouraged to bring musical instruments, banners and placards. Initiated by Anatolian Cultural Centre; endorsed by Australia-Asia Worker Links, Federation of Australian Muslim Students and Youth, Lebanese Communist Party, Northern Sudanese Women's Group (Nubian Mihaira), Palestinian Community Association of Victoria, RMIT Student Union, Socialist Alliance, Socialist Alternative, Stop the War Coalition, Resistance, Tamil Women's Organisation.

Weld Watchtower New Front in Tasmania’s Forest Effort

Open Day Draws Crowds to Threatened Forest

Huon Valley Environment Centre forest campaigners have opened a new

front in the ongoing campaign to protect Tasmania's threatened old

growth forests, establishing a vigil camp and "Weld Valley Watchtower"

to monitor Forestry Tasmania's plans for a new logging bridge over the Weld River.

The vigil camp, which includes a tree-sit watchtower high above the

rainforest
, will be used to monitor forestry activities and as a base

for conducting surveys and research in the wilderness forests of the

North Weld area.

“We have launched Weld Watchtower camp to coincide with a community open day, drawing people into the Weld forests for bushwalks, photography and talks this weekend.  Huon Valley Environment Centre plans to hold more open days to invite the community to visit the ancient forests of this area,” Huon Valley Environment Centre’s Jenny Weber said.

"Huon Valley Environment Centre volunteers have spent many hours

exploring and surveying the wilderness forests of the Weld Valley.

Spectacular unnamed waterfalls, cultural heritage sites and giant

eucalypts have been discovered. However, Forestry Tasmania persists

with plans to bulldoze a logging road and build a new bridge over the

wild Weld River to allow for logging that will damage these and other

values,"  Jenny Weber said.

"Hundreds of thousands of tax payer's dollars have already been wasted

on logging roads in the Weld Valley. Now, plans for a new bridge in

the Weld, logging in the Upper Florentine and logging roads and

bridges in the Tarkine indicate the Bartlett Government's intention to

open the way for a final assault on Tasmania's old growth forests,"  Jenny Weber said.

"With the downturn in demand for woodchips and calls by logging

contractors for an industry exit package, it is ridiculous to be

bulldozing expensive new roads into wilderness areas that have been

recommended for inclusion in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage

Area.  Huon Valley Environment Centre is calling for the immediate protection of high conservation value forests in the Weld Valley," Jenny Weber said.

Gatherings rely on the people who attend. You are invited to come along with an open heart and spirit to continue your personal healing and contribute to the healing of the planet. Gatherings have been held in various places all over our Sacred Mother Earth and have brought a great deal of healing to the land and people, but more is needed. As with all previous gatherings this one, being a four day ceremony, we ask that in respect of the sacredness there will be no drugs or alcohol needed or permitted at this gathering.

The Sacred Ceremonial Fire
The Sacred fire will again burn for the four days; the four directions; the four races; and the four sacred powers to bring healing, transformation, and help for us all to connect with Great Spirit, God, Creator, or what ever you call the Higher Power.

Donations and Sponsorship
There are a lot of costs to make this gathering happen. Because we have no outside funding we rely on you, the people, to help make this gathering happen, so please donate what you can. The New International Bookshop's new Underground Talk series presents:

Adam Bandt: The Greens and the Left under a Rudd Government
6 for 6:30pm Wednesday 11 March

New International Bookshop, Trades Hall
cnr Victoria & Lygon Sts, Carlton
Entry: $5/ $2 concession

Currently National Convenor of the Australian Greens, Adam Bandt is a leading figure on the Left today.

At the last federal election he turned the seat of Melbourne into Australia's first Labor/Greens marginal, almost toppling now Finance Minister Lindsay Tanner. Last year he ran second to Robert Doyle in a veritable Cup field vying to become Lord Mayor of Melbourne.

Crucial to Adam's success has been his ability to draw support from the traditional Greens' inner-city base AND the trade union movement. With this in mind, we have asked Adam to reflect on the role of the Greens and the Left under a Rudd government. When Labor drags its feet, what can we do to force action on climate change, saving jobs - or hold corporate Australia to account?

We're excited to have Adam launch our new Underground Talk series of Wednesday night events. This weekly series will showcase predominantly local writers and activists, giving them a chance to reflect on their work and the audience a chance to discuss the issues in a relatively informal setting.

UPCOMING SPEAKERS include Colm McNaughton on his 2008 Walkley Award-winning radio documentary 'Awakening from History'; Convincing Ground author Bruce Pascoe on the history wars in a new era; Liz Turner on the SHAC Melbourne Uni squat experience and the state of our social movements, and a whole lot more to be announced.

These events will start at 6:30pm sharp, so come early for a browse in the shop or a glass of wine by donation.

FOR MORE INFORMATION, or to discuss the Underground Talk series, contact Seb Prowse on 0431 294 773.

STOP THE ETHNIC CLEANSING OF PALESTINE

Picket Malcom Turnbull and the United Israel Appeal

Thurs, March 12 @ 6pm

Crown Towers

cnr. Queensbridge & Whiteman St,

South Bank

Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull is attending a Gala Dinner of the United Israel Appeal (UIA). The UIA's key objective is to fund Jewish migration to Israel. Almost 50% of Palestinians live around the world in exile unable to return to their homes now occupied by Israel. Meanwhile the UIA funds Jews who have no historic connection to the land to immigrate to Israel/Palestine.

While 4.6 million Palestinians live in exile, the majority in refugee camps, the UIA website promotes that it only takes AUD $650 to bring a French Jew to Israel. With an $85 a head dinner, plus pledging the UIA hopes to raise even more money to Judaise Israel and according to their own mission statement in doing so "fortifies the fabric of Israeli society." Of course their vision of an "Israeli society" is a Jewish one which discriminates against its Arab population. Currently there are over 20 laws in Israel which discriminate against Palestinians.

The UIA is part of the Zionist project of displacing and marginalising those Palestinians who have remained in Israel. Currently one of the UIA's key projects is to "pioneer" villages in the Galilee and the Negev. The UIA website describes these places as "barren" while Israel recently spent $250 million US dollars in trying to remove the Bedouin population who live in unrecognised villages from those same areas. Israel wants to pretend these people don't exist like Australia did to its own indigenous population.

No Australian support for Israel.

End the Occupation.

Friday March 13, 12pm, outside Rio Tinto (120 Collins St., Melbourne)

The violence against workers and members of the civil society by paramilitaries in Colombia, who are closely associated with the Uribe government, has been ongoing. 474 trade unions have been murdered since president Uribe came to power in 2002, and all forms of violence have been committed against Indigenous Peoples, Afro-Colombians, human rights activists and journalists.

Most of the murders are committed by paramilitaries and death squads supported by government armed forces. Paramilitaries are illegal armies that fund their operations through Colombia illegal drug trade and contributions from companies like Chiquita Brands International.

In an attempt to silence those in the internal community that raise their voices against the disastrous labour and human rights records, Uribe has launched a campaign to persecute the international solidarity, accusing intellectuals, students, activists of collaborating with the guerrilla and therefore supporting international terrorism.

Peace and Justice for Colombia- Melbourne, calls everyone concerned with the situation in Colombia to join us in a demonstration in solidarity with the Colombian people.

Labour and human rights should be before any investment or trade with Colombia!

Because being a union member is not terrorism and solidarity is not a crime!
