The muslim community in the Western Suburbs has organised a Prayer Service for Peace on Friday 16 January from 12.30 pm  to 3 pm at Werribee Secondary School Oval, Duncans Road, Werribee

(Melway Ref 206 B9).

Participants will then peacefuly march to the Honourable Julia Gillard’s electoral office to ask the Labour government to speak out for the people of Gaza and call for an immediate end to the violence.

 “Gaza is suffering from a humanitarian crisis.  Its population is trapped without electricity and water.  Food supplies are critically low,  and there is relentless bombing.  Civilians cannot get out, and much needed aid
cannot get in adequately. Our government should not condone this situation,” Sheikh Issa, Imam of the Virgin Mary Mosque in Hoppers Crossing, said.

The senior UN aid official for Gaza appealed to the international community to protect Gaza's civilians, saying nowhere in the territory of 1.5 million people is safe any longer with the conflict becoming "a test
of our humanity.

Stop the Intervention Collective Sydney (STICS) is currently working with other groups around the country to organize a protest convergence in Canberra for the opening day of parliament on Tuesday, 3 February 2009. We will demand an end to the NT Intervention and justice for Aboriginal people across Australia.

 As part of it, a statement has been created that calls on the Rudd Government to immediately re-instate the Racial Discrimination Act (1975) and to end the NT Intervention policies which remove basic welfare and human rights for Aboriginal people.

We are seeking support from as many sources as possible.

WHAT: A peaceful community action against the construction of the north-south pipeline. A group of people will occupy a section of the pipeline route that is currently being logged and will stop work on the project for the day.

WHO: Friends of the Earth and local residents affected by the pipeline construction.

WHERE: The group will meet at the corner of the Melba Highway and Castella Rd at 9am (Melways Key Map, Page 10, Q11). This is about 2 km north of the major junction of the Kinglake and Toolangi roads and the Melba Highway as you head towards Yea. Allow at least 90 minutes to drive from inner Melbourne.

WHEN: Thursday 22 January, 2009, from 9.00am.

WHY: The action aims to highlight the ecological impacts of the pipe, offer support and solidarity to rural communities, and call for wiser water policies which will secure our future needs without destroying coasts or damaging inland river systems.

Cam Walker, Friends of the Earth spokesperson, said there was growing awareness of the impacts of the pipeline on the river systems that flow into the Murray, and the impacts on rural communities along the pipe route, but that little was understood about the major ecological footprint of the pipeline project.

“The route for the north-south pipeline is being cut through the Toolangi state forest at present,” he said.

“Clear felling of forests, including old growth and some listed as Special Protection Zones (SPZ), is happening at an incredible rate along the pipe route. Commercial loggers would not be allowed to trash a SPZ - which are created because of their special ecological values – yet these areas are being devastated for the pipeline.

“The short-sighted pipeline project will pump 75 billion litres of water a year from the Goulburn River, the major Victorian tributary of the Murray, to supply Melbourne. Friends of the Earth recognise that Melbourne needs new sources of water, but we believe that there are many better options than the pipeline or the extremely expensive desalination plant.”

Friends of the Earth believe the following areas will be affected by the pipeline:

· The Goulburn River and surrounding wetlands, where the water will be pumped into the pipe
· At Devlins Bridge on the Yea River where threatened indigenous fish species are expected to be badly hit by sediment from the pipe construction
· In the Toolangi State Forest, where a 12 kilometre long, 30 metre wide corridor of mountain forests will be cleared to make way for pipeline construction.

O'Donnell Gardens, St Kilda. Now in it’s third year of sailing between areas as diverse as Hopevale Far North Queensland and Port Phillip Bay, Pelican Expeditions is actively engaging Indigenous communities to create career pathways in environmental management.

The Pelican Expeditions Two Bays program works with elders and youth on sea country to produce a curriculum based on the synergies between

Traditional Knowledge and scientifically based marine mapping. The Two Bays program undertakes

water quality and scientific studies, and promotes awareness for Victoria’s largest two

embayment’s Port Phillip and Western Port, as environmental and cultural assets.

Some of the key questions Pelican Expeditions and Parks Victorias Two Bays Forum will explore are

How do we improve our understanding of the Bays?

Why is the awareness of human activity in catchments so important?

What is the health of the bays?

Two Bays 2009 has been developed as a partnership between Pelican Expeditions, Parks Victoria, EPA Victoria, Port Phillip and Western Port CMA, the Australian Government and the Association of Bayside Municipalities.

Part of Yalukit Wilam Ngargee festival, the Indigenous Community Success Stories Forum highlights and celebrates different community programs and ideas that are working at innovative grassroots levels through to unique corporate relationships.

The forum will highlight the diverse approaches embraced by community and will take the form of presentations, talking circles and hands-on workshops.

The day includes morning and afternoon tea, lunch, networking drinks and special guest performers.

Beyond Empathy:  Success is not a destination it’s a journey
A focus on the success of one of Beyond Empathy’s Indigenous programs Mubali and the involvement of elders as a vital and critical element to the work that they do. The presentation will focus on the journey of two of Beyond Empathy's leader's journey from participant to mentor and their experience working with young emerging artists.

Growing together - Gunditjmara  mentorship program
The first of its kind in Victoria, the Gunditjmara mentorship program is a joint initiative of the Gunditjmara Aboriginal Cooperative and Brophy Family and Youth Services. Developed after concern from a local elder, it involves non-indigenous adults in the Warrnambool community agreeing to mentor Aboriginal youth, developing a special friendship with that young person in an environment of fun, trust and guidance.      

Southern Indigenous Family Violence Action Group
The Southern Indigenous Family Violence Action Group consists of Indigenous community workers/members and representatives from mainstream service providers who are committed to develop strategies, programs and culturally specific responses to reducing family violence issues within our own communities.

Inner South Community Health Service
The project aims to raise awareness about cervical cancer improve rates of pap testing and HPV vaccinations within our catchments; and explore how sexual health services can be made more accessible for Koori women.  The project plans to achieve this through the formation of two gatherings for Koori women, story telling by Aboriginal elders and the creation of a possum skin cloak through the guidance of renowned Indigenous artist Vicki Couzens.  The project will culminate in the cloak being displayed at Yalukit Wilam Ngargee Indigenous Festival.

Indigenous Access to Childcare – Aboriginal Best Start
Best Start is an early years initiative supporting families, caregivers and communities to provide the best possible environment, experiences and care for young children in the important years from pregnancy to school.

ANZ     Employment Initiatives
ANZ is providing opportunities for Indigenous Australians to create sustainable career pathways.  Representatives from ANZ will discuss the programs past successes and their plans for expanding the Indigenous employment program.

Koorie Night Market   
Celebrating the success of the Koorie Night Market project and how opportunities are created for Aboriginal stallholders and community. The Koori Night Markets are a great vehicle to assist Indigenous community to build up small businesses and share our culture with the wider ommunity.

For over 20 years Committed Artists has facilitated attendance at theatre, music, dance, sport and film productions, as well as cross cultural meetings between artists, athletes, community members and activists. In the coming years, Committed Artists aims to continue to inspire and empower the next generation of Indigenous youth through the Arts, Sport and Education.

The Wilin Centre at the Victorian College of the Arts is dedicated to providing a holistic approach to supporting Indigenous students and artists. This national centre is shaped by a seven-year strategic plan and offers student support, mentoring, tutoring, hosts artists-in-residences, cultural activities and celebrations in a friendly and accepting environment.

Digital Storytelling Talking Circle
DIDGe – Digital Storytelling Project, Goulburn Ovens TAFE and Pelican Expeditions.
The DIDGe Project has integrated the spirit of the traditional keepers and story tellers of Elders inspiring younger storytellers to interpret old narratives through new media, marking a turning point with educational exposure to digital technology for the local indigenous community.

Pelican Expeditions have been running Indigenous youth programs in Hopevale through their sailing vessel, Pelican, since 2004. Pelican were first invited to work with Hopevale in response to a film documenting Pelican Expeditions work with troubled youth in Victoria's Bass Strait. Since then

Pelican Exhibitions program has expanded each year. Pelican Expeditions are currently working on the Two Bay project in Port Phillip and Western Port Bays.

Stepping Stones Frankston (with Beyond Empathy)
Stepping Stones aims to connect Indigenous people in Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula through the arts. The project is directed by Indigenous people in the area and hires Indigenous

professional artists to deliver workshops. The arts workshops include Emu Egg Carving, Batik, Photography, Traditional Weaving, Stencil Art and Drama.  Beyond Empathy will join this talking circle.

Stepwise : Stepping Stones for Indigenous Tourism
This workshop helps clarify the complex issues of Indigenous people starting and building enterprises associated with tourism. There is much benefit to be gained from sharing your culture and country with others, but there are also many pitfalls. The Stepping Stones for Tourism is a
thorough program that helps set out a path that is appropriate to you, your culture, your country and the group of people you need to work with. Tourism is a people-focused business that requires good networks and people skills as well as cultural knowledge. How to build these skills and networks will be brought to life with the examples presented in this workshop. There will be opportunities to discuss your own ideas for tourism during this workshop that is presented by

Mandy Muir is an Indigenous businesswoman from Kakadu National Park and Nicholas Hall has been helping Indigenous people build tourism businesses for many years. Together they have a wealth of experience to share.

This presentation outlines an exciting initiative which provides educational choice and support for Koorie families. It enables families and students to choose the most appropriate schooling environment and maintains that support from Prep to Yr 12.

Deadly Kids Develop Deadly Books – Community Publishing with Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency.
This presentation will outline the work of Deadly Kids Develop Deadly Books project run in the northern suburbs with Aboriginal children including a small workshop for the participants to partake in creating a book of your own.

Viscopy’s Indigenous Visual Artist Education Program is designed for Indigenous artists and community members to gain a greater understanding about copyright, moral rights, resale royalty rights and tips for good business.

The forum will conclude with networking drinks in the Town Hall. All guests are invited to the opening of the visual arts exhibition by Indigenous men and women in various correctional facilities. The opening will include a few words from renowned singer songwriter and playwright Kutcha Edwards.

MC - Belinda Jakiel is one of the most active Indigenous leaders in our community. She is of Wotjobaluk and Polish heritage and works tirelessly to improve the health and well-being of Indigenous Victorians. Her roles include project manager with the National Indigenous Employment Program for the AFL, Sportsready, a director of Vic. Health, and director of the National Aboriginal Sports Corporation Australia. A former track and field athlete, Jakiel has a strong interest in sport and the benefits of participation.

O'Donnell Gardens, St Kilda. Now in it’s third year of sailing between areas as diverse as Hopevale Far North Queensland and Port Phillip Bay, Pelican Expeditions is actively engaging Indigenous communities to create career pathways in environmental management.

The Pelican Expeditions Two Bays program works with elders and youth on sea country to produce a curriculum based on the synergies between

Traditional Knowledge and scientifically based marine mapping. The Two Bays program undertakes

water quality and scientific studies, and promotes awareness for Victoria’s largest two

embayment’s Port Phillip and Western Port, as environmental and cultural assets.

Some of the key questions Pelican Expeditions and Parks Victorias Two Bays Forum will explore are

How do we improve our understanding of the Bays?

Why is the awareness of human activity in catchments so important?

What is the health of the bays?

Where do we begin to build partnerships for better bay management?

We all know that Melbourne is facing growing water stress. In response, the state government has announced a desalination plant for the Gippsland coast near Wonthaggi and the North - South pipeline, which will pump water from the Goulburn River.

The pipeline and desal plant will be disastrous for our state:
* They will have major impacts on rural communities and coastal environments.
* They will create very few long term jobs.
* The desal plant will need vast amounts of energy – and hence contribute substantially to greenhouse gas emissions (if green energy is sourced to run the plant, this will limit our ability to shift current energy production from coal into renewables).
* A French company - either Suez or Veolia - will control the desalinated water. Water is an essential resource and should not be controlled by multinationals
* These projects will be enormously expensive – around $5 billion dollars.

Both these projects are being built for the benefit of Melbourne people, so we should educate ourselves about the impacts of these projects, as well as looking at the alternatives.

It is time to bring the message to the Minister for Water, Tim Holding, and other key members of the state government that Melbourne people want a sustainable water future.

There will be a peaceful and colourful community assembly outside the electoral office of Victoria's water minister, Tim Holding.

Please consider coming along, and send a message to our government that we want water options that:

* are sustainable

* create long lasting jobs

* are greenhouse friendly

* don't take water from parched river systems north of the Divide or damage coastal areas

This Valentine’s Day, Rainforest Rescue is hosting its Art Auction at Brightspace in St Kilda Melbourne, exhibiting over 30 well known and emerging artists in support of rainforest conservation.

From February 5, in the lead up to the St Kilda Festival weekend, Brightspace presents the Casper Brace exhibition of rainforest inspired artwork in the Main Gallery, with Rainforest Rescue’s Art Auction artwork on exhibition and available for pre-bidding in the Window Gallery.

On February 14, Rainforest Rescue's Art Auction will be held at Brightspace, attracting an audience of art collectors, artists, philanthropists, corporates, conservation supporters and other interested parties.

Rainforest Rescue invites you to attend its Art Auction on February 14 at Brightspace and support rainforest conservation.
